Job summary

WVU Medicine in Wheeling, WV is seeking a Respiratory Care Aide to provide evaluation and care for respiratory therapy patients under the supervision of a licensed respiratory therapist. This role requires current licensure as required by the WV State Board, WV Respiratory Care Permit, and Basic Life Support within 30 days of hire.

You will assist with oxygen devices, aerosol therapies, inhaled medications, spirometry and patient education as part of a collaborative healthcare team.

Qualifications

• Requires good interpersonal communication with patients, staff and physicians.
• Must multi-task, solve problems, and make decisions.
• Current licensure as required by WV state board for respiratory care.

Responsibilities

• Set up and maintain low flow oxygen devices (≤6 LPM) including nasal cannula or simple mask.
• Set up and maintain aerosol devices with FiO2 ≤ 50%.
• Deliver medications via spontaneous nebulizer.
• Deliver meds via MDI or dry powder inhaler.
• Measure peak flow, simple spirometry, and pulse oximetry.
• Administer airway clearance therapies (therapy vest, chest physiotherapy, incentive spirometry, suctioning).
• Communicate with healthcare team regarding patient care.
• Educate patients and families with other team members.

Minimum Qualifications

Provides evaluation of and care for respiratory therapy patients under the direct supervision of a licensed registered or certified respiratory therapist.

1. 1. Must possess current licensure as required by state board where services will be provided: WV: Student Respiratory Care Permit through the West Virginia Board of Respiratory Care
2. 2. Obtain certification in Basic Life Support within 30 days of hire date.

Core Duties and Responsibilities

Work under the supervision of a licensed respiratory therapist certified or registered. This position will:

1. 1. Set up and maintain low flow oxygen devices of 6 LPM or less to include nasal cannula or a simple mask.
2. 2. Set up and maintain aerosol devices with Fi02 of equal to or less than 50%.
3. 3. Deliver medications through a spontaneous small volume nebulizer.
4. 4. Deliver medication via Metered Dose Inhaler (MDI) or dry powder inhaler
5. 5. Measure of peak flow, simple spirometry, and pulse oximetry.
6. 6. Administer the following airway clearance devices or techniques: therapy vest, chest physiotherapy, incentive spirometry, suctioning via artificial airway, and positive expiratory pressure therapies.
7. 7. Communicate appropriately and effectively with other members of the healthcare team regarding all aspects of patient care.
8. 8. Provides assistance with patient and family/caregiver education along with other members of the healthcare team.

Physical Requirements

1. 1. Ability to be on feet/walking extended periods of time.
2. 2. Ability to lift, push, and/or pull 40 pounds.
