Job description

Respiratory Care Assistant

The Respiratory Care Assistant role is designed for first-year respiratory therapy students to gain exposure to an inpatient setting, with a flexible work schedule that is set around classes.

Must be enrolled in a Respiratory Therapy Program.

Shifts are 4 hours, 4 days per week, and can be during day or evening shifts.

The pay range for this position is $18.00-$26.85.

Purpose:

Under the general direction of a respiratory therapist and in accordance with the PA Practice Act or NY State guidelines, the student respiratory care assistant will perform various functions including ordering, inventorying, and distributing equipment such as medical gases. This position also assists clinical staff with tasks as directed. The assistant is responsible for assembling, transporting, disinfecting, calibrating, and troubleshooting respiratory equipment, maintaining equipment levels, and supporting respiratory therapists and staff with various duties.

Responsibilities:
  • Provide excellent service by actively listening and responding to patients, families, physicians, and staff needs.
  • Maintain supplies of transport oxygen and cylinders across inpatient units, emergency department, and clinics.
  • Perform routine assembly, maintenance, and cleaning of respiratory care equipment; disinfect equipment prior to calibration and assembly; ensure adequate equipment levels daily.
  • Transport dirty equipment for cleaning using infection control techniques.
  • Handle and use cleaning and disinfecting solutions appropriately.
  • Use personal protective equipment correctly.
  • Report equipment malfunctions to respiratory leadership.
  • Inspect equipment for proper assembly and functioning; perform preventative maintenance per protocols.
  • Calibrate equipment according to specifications.
  • Transport equipment between units and procedure areas as directed.
  • Assist biomedical technicians in tracking respiratory equipment.
  • Manage identification, cataloging, and tracking of respiratory equipment.
  • Assist with bronchoscope procedures: setup before and after, and process scopes per manufacturer recommendations.
  • Assist with setting up for non-emergent intubations and extubations.
  • Download and document sleep studies as required.
  • Perform smoking cessation counseling per department policy.
  • Deliver home care supplies such as oxygen tanks and compressors.
  • Maintain proficiency with Microsoft Office, electronic health records, ePro ordering system, and print ordering system.
