Job description

Summary

Perform direct student care and student‑care related activities, including diapering, toileting, dressing, feeding, and ensuring students' learning and behavioral objectives are achieved.

Essential Job Functions

• Assume responsibility for student health and hygiene needs, including administering basic first aid, diapering, toileting, dressing, and feeding.
• Collaborate with the student’s school nurse, teacher, and therapists to provide an optimal educational experience.
• Maintain confidentiality of student records and assist with health compliance.
• Communicate effectively with students, nursing staff, classroom teachers, co‑workers, and others.
• Implement instructional plans as directed by licensed teachers and therapists.
• Observe, document, and reinforce appropriate student behaviors; communicate activities to teachers and facilitators.
• Assist with non‑instructional activities.
• Follow established policies and procedures for safely managing, operating, and cleaning equipment.
• Use assistive devices for ambulation, eating, and dressing.
• Provide feedback to staff attending IEP meetings when needed.
• Retrieve students from buses or cars at the beginning of classes and escort them to transportation at the end of classes when required.

Physical Abilities

• Lift students and perform manipulations for diapering, toileting, feeding, dressing, and other daily living skills.
• Frequently see, speak, hear, sit, stand, walk, use hands and fingers, reach, climb stairs, balance, bend, twist, stoop, kneel, crouch, and crawl.
• Push, pull, lift, or carry up to 100 lbs.
• No lifting, bending, or twisting restrictions.

Qualifications

• At least 19 years of age.
• Education: Associate’s degree or higher, 60 semester hours of coursework, or a high‑school diploma or GED with a score of 460 or higher on the ETS Parapro; or a high‑school diploma or GED with the following ACT Workkeys scores:
  • Applied Mathematics/Applied Math (score 4)
  • Reading for Information/Workplace Documents (score 4)
• Completion of a district‑approved program that prepares an employee to meet student health and hygiene needs.
• Prior experience working with students with special needs preferred.

Additional Information

Travel between schools may be required.
