Job Profile Summary

This role focuses on providing professional and nonprofessional nursing care services in accordance with physician orders. It also involves performing nursing support duties, providing basic care services to patients without an RN or LPN license. Positions in this role work under the supervision of physicians, mid-level practitioners, and registered nurses depending on the unit. The role requires specialized knowledge or skills gained through vocational education, training, and experience, most commonly applied to patient care and scientific/laboratory jobs. It is an experienced level role that requires basic knowledge of procedures and tools, works under moderate supervision, and involves routine problem-solving with some interpretation or deviation from standard procedures.

Job Overview

This position works under the supervision of a professional nurse and collaborates to meet patient needs within the scope of the role. It assists in direct patient care, provides environmental support, and facilitates patient safety on designated units. The role requires maintaining competency in role-specific skills and supporting a patient and family-centered care environment.

Job Description

Minimum Qualifications:

  • High school diploma or equivalent
  • Current enrollment in an accredited nursing program
  • Basic Life Support (BLS) Certification

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Completion of a certified nursing assistant (CNA) training program or equivalent
  • Completion of one clinical rotation

Duties and Responsibilities:

  1. Assist the registered nurse in functional care of patients, ensuring efficient and patient-centered care suitable for the developmental age of patients.
  2. Perform delegated tasks and communicate findings/concerns to the professional nurse.
  3. Provide or assist with activities of daily living (ADLs), answer call lights, and perform hourly rounding.
  4. Greet patients, families, visitors, and staff, maintaining confidentiality and responding promptly to requests.
  5. Collect, record, and communicate patient clinical data timely.
  6. Prepare rooms for admission/transfer/discharge and care for patient belongings.
  7. Transport or accompany patients safely and efficiently.
  8. Provide comfort measures such as positioning, linen changes, and back rubs.
  9. Assist with mobility and range of motion exercises.
  10. Set up procedures, clean and discard equipment, and perform specimen collection and testing.
  11. Maintain biomedical equipment and report malfunctions.
  12. Perform wound care and apply DSD after assessment.
  13. Perform 12-lead EKGs and connect monitoring equipment under nurse supervision.
  14. Prime IV tubing with non-medication solutions.
  15. Act as a sitter as requested to ensure patient safety.
  16. Support open communication and negotiate break times with nurses.
  17. Maintain a clean, safe work environment, stock equipment, and report issues.
  18. Cover for the Unit Coordinator in communication and greeting duties.
  19. Adhere to department policies regarding attendance, education, resource utilization, and participation in meetings.
Physical Requirements
  • Prolonged standing/walking, lifting, positioning, and transferring patients and equipment.
  • Exposure to hazardous chemicals, bodily substances, noise, radiation, and infectious materials.
  • Contact with patients in various circumstances, including irregular hours and unpredictable situations.
Skills & Abilities
  • Apply skills and knowledge to provide age-appropriate care considering development and cultural factors.
  • Assist in providing care under the supervision of a licensed nurse following hospital policies and procedures.
  • Maintain positive relationships and effective communication with patients, families, and staff.
