Student Nurse - Float Pool Med-Surg PRN - Fairfield Hospital

Summary of Primary Function/General Purpose of Position

The Student Nurse provides direct patient care under the guidance of the Registered Nurse or designated healthcare professional in accordance with federal, state, and local regulations and within the policies, procedures, and guidelines of Bon Secours Mercy Health.

Essential Job Functions
  • Supports the nurse in the application of the nursing process under RN supervision.
  • Develops critical thinking skills through collaboration with the RN to ensure quality patient care.
  • Seeks educational opportunities related to nursing practice and critical thinking.
  • Provides basic patient care including comfort, vital signs, personal hygiene, and mobility, along with unit-specific duties.
  • Acts as liaison between patient and nurse to report changes or concerns.
  • Delivers high-quality customer service to patients, families, visitors, and staff.
  • Accurately documents patient care in a timely manner.
  • Participates in hand-offs and reports pertinent patient and departmental information.
  • Performs delegated tasks once competency is validated.
Education

HS/GED required. Currently enrolled in a nursing program with at least one clinical nursing course and one clinical rotation completed.

Certifications

BLS (preferred)

Training

Completed First Clinical Rotation as a Nursing Student. EPIC EHR training (preferred).

Work Experience

Recent experience in acute or long-term care (preferred).

Working Conditions
  • Periods of high stress and fluctuating workloads.
  • Potential exposure to physical altercations, verbal abuse, and hazardous substances.
  • May require use of physical restraints.
  • Exposure to weather, noise, bright lights, and infectious materials.
  • Potential for interruptions and working alone.
Patient Population

Knowledge and skills to care for patients across all ages, from neonates to geriatrics, assessing data and providing age-appropriate care.

Physical Requirements

Ability to lift up to 50 lbs., push/pull, stoop, kneel, crawl, climb, balance, bend, sit, walk, and stand as needed.

Additional Physical Requirements

Manual dexterity, shift work, maneuvering patients, hearing alarms, reaching, repetitive movements, visual acuity, and exposure to chemicals and biological hazards.
