Position Summary:
We are seeking a Student Nurse Extern for the Night Shift in the Emergency Department. This is a per diem position.

In this role, the successful candidate will perform patient care procedures and related activities within the framework of the written care plan and under the supervision of a registered nurse. The extern will work closely with the RN to determine patient needs, implement care activities, and report responses. Responsibilities include carrying out patient assignments, observing and reporting to the RN, and supporting patient care activities.

Job Responsibilities:

• Participate in unit-based quality initiatives under RN guidance.
• Understand the rationale of assigned patient treatments and procedures.
• Provide for hygiene, safety, and comfort of patients.
• Utilize nursing interventions to prevent complications from bed rest and immobility.
• Assist with activities of daily living and promote self-care.
• Follow infection prevention and risk management guidelines.
• Measure vital signs, apply dressings, perform intake/output, and oral suctioning.
• Use the written care plan to deliver patient care.
• Provide age-appropriate care, considering physical, psychosocial, cultural, and religious needs.
• Observe and report patient condition changes, document activities, and communicate with the healthcare team.
• Support patient privacy and confidentiality.
• With additional training, perform clinical functions such as obtaining 12-lead EKGs and using glucometers.
• Participate in care planning, education, and team interactions.
• Recognize own limitations and seek assistance when needed.

Minimum Qualifications:
Completion of at least one clinical semester focused on medical/surgical nursing.
