Position Summary:

We have an exciting opportunity for a Student Nurse Extern (Per Diem, Night Shift) in the Emergency Department. In this role, you will perform patient care procedures within the framework of the written care plan and under the supervision of a registered nurse. You will work closely with the RN to assess patient needs, implement care activities, and report responses. Your responsibilities include carrying out assignments under supervision, observing professional nursing care, and supporting patient comfort and safety.

Job Responsibilities:

• Participate in unit-based quality initiatives under RN guidance.
• Understand the rationale behind patient treatment and care procedures.
• Assist with hygiene, safety, and comfort needs of patients.
• Utilize nursing interventions to prevent complications from bed rest and immobility.
• Assist patients with activities of daily living and promote self-care.
• Follow infection prevention, control guidelines, and risk management protocols.
• Measure vital signs, apply dressings, perform intake/output, and provide oral care.
• Use the written patient care plan to deliver care.
• Provide age-appropriate care, considering physical, psychosocial, cultural, and developmental needs.
• Observe and report changes in patient condition to the RN.
• Support patient privacy and confidentiality.
• Communicate effectively with patients, families, and staff.
• With additional training, perform functions such as obtaining 12-lead EKGs and using glucometers.
• Participate in care planning, documentation, and interdisciplinary team activities.
• Recognize limitations and seek assistance when needed.

Minimum Qualifications:

Completion of at least one clinical semester focused on medical/surgical nursing in a nursing program. Effective communication skills are required.

The salary for this role is $20.00 per hour, consistent with New York State Law on Salary Transparency. Actual compensation may vary based on experience, education, and hospital needs.
