General Summary

Must be a student nurse pursuing licensure. Functioning as a member of the Care Delivery Team, the Patient Care Assistant (PCA) Student Nurse Extern provides basic patient care and activities of daily living under the direct supervision of the RN team leader. Utilizes the nursing process and assists in planning, implementing, and evaluating patient care under RN direction. The Student Nurse Extern will not perform procedures requiring licensure by the State of Ohio (e.g., passing medications, nursing diagnosis, or admission assessments). Performs assigned functional tasks, treatments, and procedures related to patient care and the unit environment. Reports all findings, information, and observations to the RN team leader and documents appropriately. Cleans and restocks nursing units, retrieves medical records, and performs clerical duties as needed.

Minimum Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities

  • Knowledge of nursing practices and procedures, typically acquired through high school and nursing classes.
  • Completion of a two-week Nurse Aide Training Program and passing the Ohio Department of Health Nurse Aide exam; this can be completed after hiring. If not state tested, must have completed the first year of clinicals in an accredited nursing program.
  • Approximately three to four weeks of orientation and three to six months of related work experience to function independently.
  • Effective communication skills (written, verbal, nonverbal) to interact with diverse populations including patients, families, and staff.
  • Provide a faculty recommendation from the current School of Nursing.

Working Conditions and Reporting Relationships

  • Normal patient care environment with minimal exposure to noise, dust, and temperature variations.
  • Up to 50% exposure to communicable diseases and distasteful patient care activities.
  • Requires concentration and attention to detail for 50-80% of the time.
  • Physical effort up to 50% of the time; ability to walk, stand, and bend up to 80% of the time.
