Job summary

Comal Independent School District in Texas is seeking a Transportation Support Specialist to assist the driver workforce with student management issues, ensuring safe and on-time bus delivery. You will communicate professionally with campus administrators, staff, students, and parents.

This role requires a CDL, TEA/DOT awareness, and the ability to train drivers and dispatchers, with duties ranging from incident documentation to coordinating actions with campus leadership.

Qualifications

• High school diploma or GED required.
• Class B CDL with P&S endorsements and clean DOT/TEA record.
• Texas School Bus Driver Safety Training Certificate.
• Willing to obtain TAPT certification as a Pupil Transportation Official/Supervisor/Specialist/Trainer.
• Experience with school bus operations and driving preferred.

Responsibilities

• Acts as the main point of contact for concerns regarding student management issues and/or procedures.
• Exercises student management through effective and professional communication.
• Provides guidance to drivers and bus assistants utilizing board policy, student conduct rules.
• Reviews student behavior reports to ensure quality of reports by drivers.
• Conducts conferences with parents, students, and drivers on disciplinary issues.
• Works with administration on campuses to ensure proper disciplinary action.
• Reports any difficulties or changes in student needs to the Area Supervisor.
• Makes every effort to maintain teamwork and professionalism with staff and students.
• Provides back-up to Transportation office; handles two-way radio; performs dispatching duties as needed.
• Participates in inclement weather planning affecting school operations.
• Encourages attendance at training and field in-service training.
• Attends professional development activities to stay current in transportation.

Job description

Primary Purpose

Responsible for assisting the driver workforce with student management issues/concerns to ensure safe and on time delivery. Maintains the highest level of professional communication with campus administrators, fellow employees and our community.

Education / Certification

• High school diploma or GED.
• Class B CDL License with P&S endorsements with an acceptable motor vehicle record as determined by the Department of Transportation and the Texas Education Motor vehicle records will be reviewed annually to ensure compliance with DOT and TEA standards.
• Texas School Bus Driver Safety Training Certificate.
• Must be certified or willing to obtain certification by the Texas Association of Pupil Transportation (TAPT) as a Pupil Transportation Official, Supervisor, Specialist or Trainer.

Special Knowledge / Skills

• Ability to work effectively with campus principals, staff, students, and parents.
• Knowledge of bus rules, student handbook/student code of conduct, Board policy.
• Excellent interpersonal skills and well developed written and verbal communication skills.
• Basic math skills, detail orientation, mapping and routing skills.
• Computer literate, preferably in word processing, Access, and spreasheets.

Experience / Other Requirements

• School bus and / or commercial driving experience.
• Personal cell phone is required to handle district related business, including after hours, or when away from the office on district business.
• Required to present and maintain a neat, clean, professional appearance and good personal hygiene at all times.

Major Responsibilities And Duties

• Provides guidance to drivers and bus assistants utilizing board policy, student code of conduct, transportation handbook and school bus rules.
• Reviews student behavior reports to ensure quality of reports by drivers.
• Conducts conferences with parents, students, and drivers on disciplinary issues.
• Works with administration on campuses to ensure proper disciplinary action.
• Reports any difficulties or changes in student needs to the Area Supervisor.
• Maintains a professional and cooperative attitude with fellow employees, supervisors, students, parents, and school personnel, always promoting teamwork.
• Provides back-up assistance to Transportation office; answers the phone; operates two- way radio. Performs Bus Driver, Driver Trainer and Dispatching duties as needed.
• Participates / advises administration about inclement weather conditions that may result in the closing of schools or road hazards.
• Encourages attendance at all assigned training, safety workshops and field in-service training.
• Attends professional development activities/programs to keep abreast of developments and innovations in area of transportation.
• Responsible for properly maintaining district records, adhering to all policies set forth by the district for records maintenance and learning the records retention schedule for department records.
