Job summary

Basin Electric Power Cooperative invites applications for a STUDENT INTERN - MAINTENANCE (DGC) at the Dakota Gasification Company location in Beulah, ND. This summer internship runs approximately May 17, 2027 through August 20, 2027 and focuses on assisting Field Maintenance Technicians with repairing plant equipment.

You will work with a variety of tools, gain hands-on experience, and participate in safety procedures.

Job Description:

POSITION PURPOSE

This position is located at our Dakota Gasification Company location in Beulah, ND.

This position is for the summer months of 2027 (approximately May 17, 2027 through August 20, 2027).

This temporary position’s primary job responsibility will be to assist Field Maintenance Technicians with repairing plant equipment in the company's field maintenance area.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES

• Assist with maintenance tasks to repair and maintain plant equipment and machinery.
• Assist with operating all types of power, hydraulic, and hand tools, including saws, drills, sanders, impact wrenches, jackhammers, machine cutting tools, slings, come-a-longs; hydraulic, pneumatic and measuring tools; oxyacetylene, welding/fabrication; and hydro blasting equipment.
• Assist with troubleshooting equipment to diagnose problems.
• Support the annual Family Night event, including setup, participation, and cleanup, as part of departmental responsibilities.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

• At least 18 years of age.
• Enrolled as a full-time student in a welding or mechanical maintenance program, with freshman year completed; or recently completed a welding or mechanical maintenance program (within the past 12 months).
• Maintain a minimum GPA of 2.5
• A valid driver’s license.

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS

• Previous internship or relevant work experience.
• Additional certifications or coursework in field of study.

PHYSICAL AND ENVIRONMENTAL DEMANDS

Requires continuous walking; frequent standing, bending, stooping, climbing stairs and ladders, kneeling, lifting and carrying up to 50 pounds, reaching above and below shoulder level; and occasional sitting, crawling, lifting 50 pounds from knee to shoulder high, pushing and pulling up to 60 pounds. Requires continuous use of tools and occasional turning of valves and use of foot controls. Requires grip strength of 45 pounds. The majority of the incumbent’s shift is spent indoors. Occasionally requires working at heights from 10 to 100 feet, which requires the use of safety equipment, including a harness, in accordance with ANSI Z359 standards, and in high climbing areas on grating, ladders, scaffolding, and other areas requiring use of safety equipment. Continuously exposed to noise; frequent exposure to dirt, dust, fumes, chemicals, and extreme heat and cold, and occasional exposure to vibration, poor ventilation, and confined areas. Incumbent is required to wear dust masks, respirators and full face Scott Air Paks when necessary. May occasionally be required to work rotating shifts. Requires good finger dexterity, good binocular vision, good color vision and hearing, and ability to speak. Must be able to operate a motor vehicle. Must have the ability to perform close accurate work, communicate effectively with others, present information in a clear, concise manner and follow verbal and written instructions.
