Job summary

UC San Diego Health is seeking a MD/DO physician for a Per Diem position at the Student Health Services clinic on the UCSD campus. The role focuses on primary and urgent care for adolescents and young adults, including gynecologic care and family planning.

The physician will supervise nurse practitioners, conduct exams, order tests, and provide education and preventive care. Comprehensive HIPAA-compliant patient care and collaboration with SHW departments are expected.

Qualifications

• Current State of California M.D. and/or D.O. license.
• Board Certified actively participating in Maintenance of Certification requirements in a Primary Care discipline.
• Current valid Federal Controlled Substance Registration (DEA) Certificate.
• Current BLS certification.
• Must possess the legal requirements to practice medicine and surgery as determined by the Medical Board of California as evidence of a current valid license.
• Ability to practice medicine and surgery by evidence of graduation from a class A accredited school of medicine with the degree of M.D. and/or D.O.
• Ability to prescribe controlled substances by evidence of a current valid Federal Controlled Substances Registration (DEA) Certificate.
• Skill and knowledge in gynecologic, preventive care: Pap smears, BSE, contraception, STI prevention and treatment, and ability to perform pelvic examinations and participate in the management of family planning.
• Skill in working with acute illnesses and injuries in an urgent care setting.
• Skill to perform minor surgery and wound care.
• Skill in managing time efficiently and exercising good judgment in establishing priorities, to appropriately address the relative importance of varying patient and clinic needs.
• Strong organizational, problem-solving and decision-making skills.
• Ability to serve a large volume of patients rapidly and effectively on a walk-in or appointment basis within set time limits.
• Skill to communicate in a helpful, non-judgmental, effective, and informative manner in person and by telephone, video conferencing or telehealth platform.
• Ability to work well and cooperatively with students and a diverse group of other people. Demonstrated skill in interacting with a diversity of personalities in a professional, informative, diplomatic, and courteous manner. Cultural competency in working with diverse populations including excellent communication skills and advocacy skills.
• Ability to supervise and provide consultation to nurse practitioners, nurses, and other health care providers.
• Ability to provide supportive counseling to students.

• Demonstrate experience working an outpatient medical settings, (preferably at a student health service) with adolescent and young adult patients.
• Ability to serve a large volume of patients rapidly and effectively on a walk-in or appointment basis, within set time limits.
• Skill to communicate in a helpful, nonjudgmental, effective and informative manner, in person or by telephone. Excellent interpersonal skills, tact, diplomacy, in order to interact effectively with all levels of professional staff and patients. Ability to work as a team member.
• Demonstrated experience in using electronic medical records and understanding of medical record management. Demonstrated knowledge and use of electronic medical records system for proper and timely documentation of patient-related notes and accurate coding for billing.
• Knowledge of community resources and public health requirements of the County of San Diego and the State of California.
• Demonstrated knowledge of what constitutes professional behavior.
• Ability to give and receive constructive comments regarding medical practice, administrative procedures or other factors influencing patient care.
• Demonstrated ability to expand and update skills and prior experience using a personal computer, software (Word, Excel, Outlook, Teams, EMR, etc.), and standard business equipment and resources.
• Proven ability to diffuse emotionally charged situations and resolve patient, staff or parent complaints appropriately and effectively.
• Knowledge of campus and community agencies most frequently used in ambulatory care.
• Ability to use discretion, maintain utmost confidentiality and comply with all requirements in use of computer systems and access to any and all patient, student, employee and University data, in electronic and hard copy formats, in compliance with University, state and federal guidelines, including, but not limited to Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act (HIPAA) and Family Educational Rights and Privacy Act (FERPA).

Responsibilities

• The Physician will provide comprehensive primary health care services for acute and chronic illnesses and injuries, primarily for adolescent and young adult patients in both primary care and urgent care setting.
• The Physician will perform minor surgery, patient examination, evaluation, treatment and follow up care for both acute and chronic illness.
• The Physician will order appropriate lab and radiological testing and interpret test results.
• The Physician will manage gynecological healthcare including assessment, treatment, screening and counseling for Family Planning.
• The Physician will assess and provide treatment and counseling for mental health disorders.
• The Physician will provide patient education and counseling regarding general health maintenance and preventive recommendations.
• The Physician will prescribe medication accurately and appropriately.
• The Physician will provide professional supervision of nurse practitioners, instruct and educate trainees and/or staff and assist in public relations efforts.
