Job summary

UC San Diego's Human Resources department is hiring a Student Employment Assistant to provide HR guidance on recruitment, classification, compensation, and payroll for casual student employees across campus. You will advise campus administrators, review postings, and manage inquiries within the Student Employment office.

The role requires strong analytical and communication skills, ability to handle confidential information, and a collaborative approach within a busy team operating hybrid work

Qualifications

  • Basic understanding of human resources policies and programs.
  • Ability to interpret policies and procedures relevant to payroll and employment for represented and non-represented employees.
  • Proven ability to analyze complex pay records, personnel forms and payroll time records to initiate payments and prepare timesheets.
  • Proven experience with timekeeping and payroll reporting processes, including overtime and audit reporting.
  • Strong customer service skills with the willingness and ability to embrace and consistently practice our commitment to client service.
  • Demonstrated strong interpersonal and communication skills to interact effectively with diverse groups of people at all levels in an environment with changing priorities and deadlines using diplomacy and tact.

  • Demonstrated ability to learn new methods for computer assisted data reporting/retrieval, new computer applications, data and word processing software and relational database systems.

  • Skill using standard computerized, networked business applications: word processing (e.g. Microsoft Word), spreadsheet (e.g. Excel), communications and scheduling (e.g. Outlook), with the willingness and ability to expand and update skills as needed.

DESCRIPTION

Under general supervision, the Student Employment Assistant will provide human resources guidance related to recruitment, classification, compensation, and payroll for casual/restricted student employees.


With knowledge of the HR functions of the Student Employment Office, advises campus administrators, faculty, and staff on student employment policies and procedures for multiple departments across campus. Works within the Student Employment team to review and approve student employment job postings, reclassifications, and equity requests. Manages cases within the Student Employment case management system related to staff, faculty, and student inquiries.



QUALIFICATIONS


  • Basic understanding of human resources policies and programs. Ability to interpret policies and procedures relevant to payroll and employment for represented and non-represented employees.

  • Ability to work independently with minimal supervision; initiation to follow-through to completion of all duties.


  • Skill using standard computerized, networked business applications: word processing (e.g. Microsoft Word), spreadsheet (e.g. Excel), communications and scheduling (e.g. Outlook), with the willingness and ability to expand and update skills as needed.

SPECIAL CONDITIONS


  • Job offer is contingent upon satisfactory clearance based on Background Check results.


  • Overtime and weekends may be required.


  • This position has been identified as a Mandated Reporter pursuant to the California Child Abuse and Neglect Reporting Act and requires immediate reporting of physical abuse, sexual abuse, emotional abuse, or neglect of anyone under the age of 18. It is the responsibility of the Mandated Reporter to ensure that they obtain proper training in order to fulfill their reporting responsibilities as required by the California Child Abuse and Neglect Reporting Act and University policy, and to complete and submit the required reports to the UC San Diego Police Department without delay.




Pay Transparency Act


Annual Full Pay Range: $64,498 - $92,436 (will be prorated if the appointment percentage is less than 100%)


Hourly Equivalent: $30.89 - $44.27


Factors in determining the appropriate compensation for a role include experience, skills, knowledge, abilities, education, licensure and certifications, and other business and organizational needs. The Hiring Pay Scale referenced in the job posting is the budgeted salary or hourly range that the University reasonably expects to pay for this position. The Annual Full Pay Range may be broader than what the University anticipates to pay for this position, based on internal equity, budget, and collective bargaining agreements (when applicable).
