Profile

Purpose and Scope: The student intern supports FMCNA's mission, vision, core values, and customer service philosophy. Adheres to the FMCNA Compliance Program, including following all regulatory and FMS policy requirements. The intern functions as part of the dialysis healthcare team, providing medical nutrition therapy for patients under the supervision of a registered dietitian, in accordance with FMCNA policies, procedures, and training, and in compliance with regulations set by relevant authorities.

Responsibilities

1. Review renal nutrition basics and other components of staff dietitian training and orientation.
2. Understand the workflow of the Renal Dietitian and the role of the RD.
3. Conduct nutrition interviews with patients.
4. Calculate diet prescription recommendations.
5. Provide nutrition counseling to patients and caregivers on prescribed renal diets.
6. Collect data for various assessments (initial, 90-day, semi-annual, annual).
7. Assist in developing and implementing nutrition care plans.
8. Review monthly nutrition data and write progress notes.
9. Participate in interdisciplinary team meetings and quality improvement activities.
10. Develop nutrition-related projects for patients or staff, such as educational materials or activities.

Physical Demands and Working Conditions

Includes desk work, computer use, patient interaction, and travel between facilities. Work environment typical of healthcare settings, with exposure to infectious materials and moderate noise levels. Reasonable accommodations are available for individuals with disabilities.

Qualifications

• Bachelor's or Master's degree in Nutrition or Dietetics, or current enrollment in an accredited dietetics program.
• Preferred: Outstanding customer service skills and a desire to provide superior patient care.

Relationships and Supervision

The intern cannot work under the supervision of a family member nor care for a family member patient. Supervision is provided by a Registered Dietitian under the Clinical Manager's oversight, based on an educational plan.
