Job summary

Savannah-Chatham County Public School System TRANSPORTATION in Savannah, Georgia is seeking a School Bus Monitor to transport students, monitor behavior, and assist with safety on the bus. This role supports operations for 196 work days and follows district procedures for emergencies and student care.

The position requires the ability to work with children of all ages, attend training, and lift up to 40 pounds.

Qualifications

• Must be able to work with children of all ages.
• Must be 21 years of age to apply.
• Ability to lift equipment and/or student weighing 40 pounds.
• Written and oral communication.
• Pre-employment and annual physical examination.
• Must successfully complete Bus Monitor Training Program provided by Savannah Chatham County Public Schools Transportation Department

Responsibilities

• Demonstrates prompt and regular attendance; work hours may vary during the school year.
• Contacts dispatch during timeframe published in the Driver’s Handbook to report same day absences.
• Rides bus on each route to ensure physical and emotional safety of children.
• Learns the route in order to assist a substitute driver.
• Assists the driver in keeping appropriate records pertaining to problems arising on the bus.
• Attends required training meetings and all other meetings as requested.
• Assist with loading and unloading students, as well as seating and safety belting students.
• Keeps up with student belongings, coats, personal bags, written communication from home/school, etc.
• Assists the driver in emergency situations; understand how to operate emergency exits and lift students if necessary.
• Monitors/operates communication devices for essential and emergency transmissions only.
• Assist with emergency evacuation drills as required.
• Maintains cordial relations with parents, administrators, other employees, and the general public.
• Maintains student discipline on the bus and references serious infractions using District approved process.
• Collects, maintains, and updates emergency information and is aware of students’ medical needs.
• Special Education Lift Bus Only: Operates wheelchair lift and secures door on lift; follows IEP accommodations.
• Special Education Lift Bus Only: Performs tie downs for wheelchairs and seat security devices.
• Understands operation and securing wheelchairs and adaptive equipment.
• Perform other duties as necessary for the effectiveness of the organization.
