Job description

Position Overview

Orofino Jr./Sr. High School is seeking a positive, relationship-focused individual to serve as a Student Support Specialist. This position works directly with students, staff, and families to help students overcome challenges, develop positive habits, and achieve success both academically and behaviorally. The Student Support Specialist serves as a trusted adult, mentor, and problem-solver while supporting the school’s Positive Behavioral Interventions and Supports (PBIS) program and student intervention systems. This position plays a key role in creating a safe, welcoming, and supportive environment where all students can thrive.

Responsibilities

Student Support

  • Build positive relationships with students and serve as a trusted adult on campus.
  • Provide support, encouragement, and mentoring to students experiencing academic, attendance, social, or behavioral challenges.
  • Assist students in resolving conflicts and making positive choices.
  • Conduct student check‑ins and follow‑up meetings.
  • Support students returning to class after behavioral incidents.
  • Help students develop self‑regulation, communication, and problem‑solving skills.

School Climate and PBIS

  • Support implementation of the school’s PBIS and PRIDE initiatives.
  • Track student eligibility for PBIS rewards and recognition activities.
  • Assist with planning and organizing student incentive events and celebrations.
  • Promote positive student behavior and school engagement.
  • Help maintain records related to student behavior and interventions.

Collaboration and Communication

  • Work closely with teachers, counselors, administrators, and families to support student success.
  • Communicate with parents regarding student concerns and progress when directed.
  • Participate in student support meetings and intervention planning.
  • Serve as a resource for staff regarding student support strategies.

Intervention and Behavior Support

  • Respond to student concerns and assist with de‑escalation when needed.
  • Facilitate restorative conversations and conflict resolution.
  • Provide intervention support for students demonstrating challenging behaviors.
  • Monitor student progress and follow through on intervention plans.
  • Assist administration in maintaining a safe and productive learning environment.

Data and Documentation

  • Maintain accurate records related to student behavior and interventions.
  • Assist with behavior data collection and reporting.
  • Support PBIS documentation and reward tracking systems.
  • Help identify students who may need additional support services.

Other Duties

  • Participate in staff meetings and professional development.
  • Assist with supervision of students as assigned.
  • Perform other duties as assigned by the principal.
Qualifications

Required

  • High school diploma or GED.
  • Ability to build positive relationships with adolescents.
  • Strong communication and interpersonal skills.
  • Ability to maintain confidentiality and professionalism.
  • Ability to work independently and collaboratively as part of a team.

Preferred

  • Experience working with youth in schools, athletics, recreation programs, childcare, mentoring programs, community organizations, or related settings.
  • Experience supporting students with behavioral, social, or academic needs.
  • Knowledge of PBIS, restorative practices, or behavior support strategies.
  • First Aid/CPR certification or willingness to obtain.
