Job summary

West Virginia University is accepting applications for an Academic Counselor/Learning Specialist in the Student Athlete Academic Services department. You will develop individualized academic support plans, assist with remediation of foundational skills, and provide guidance on study skills, time management, note-taking, and literacy development.

Travel for visits and collaboration with campus units are involved, with a strong emphasis on empowering student-athletes to succeed academically.

Qualifications

• Master's degree, preferably in education, special education, learning disabilities, educational therapy, counseling or similar field.
• A minimum of three (3) years of experience in teaching, tutoring, or instructing students in a secondary or higher education environment.
• Any equivalent combination of related education and/or experience will be considered.

Responsibilities

• Coordinate and facilitate initial screening and diagnostic testing for new student-athletes.
• Coordinate and facilitate testing for current student-athletes in consultation with a licensed professional.
• Collaborate with necessary campus units.
• Meet with prospective student-athletes during official and unofficial visits (weeknights and/or weekends may be required).
• Develop a supportive, individualized approach for assisting a student academically, including remediation of fundamental skills and literacy development.
• Evaluate documentation to determine best practices for academic support to impacted student-athletes.
• Assist student-athletes in social and emotional areas impacting learning and refer when necessary.
• Assist with accessing resources to improve academic situation (e.g., learning disabilities testing, accommodations).
• Interpret and make recommendations based on testing results.
