Job summary

University of Maryland Eastern Shore seeks an Academic Advisor for Student-Athletes to provide comprehensive academic guidance and support to ensure progress toward graduation and NCAA eligibility. The role reports to the Assistant Athletic Director for Academics and is a full-time, twelve-month contract with benefits.

The candidate will meet with student-athletes, develop academic plans, maintain files, and monitor progress while supporting campus programs.

Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s degree required.
  • Two years of professional academic advising experience preferred.
  • Knowledge of FERPA and student privacy regulations.

Responsibilities

  • Meet with student-athletes to advise on academic progress toward graduation.
  • Provide pre-advising for course registration and degree requirements.
  • Maintain student-athlete academic files and advise on NCAA progress.
  • Monitor NCAA rules and support department programs and functions.
  • Perform other related duties as assigned.

The position reports to the Assistant Athletic Director for Academics. The Athletic Academic Advisor is responsible for providing academic advising and support for student-athletes to ensure that they make satisfactory/appropriate academic progress towards graduation and meet all university, conference, and NCAA eligibility requirements. Salary Range: $45,000 to $55,000 Benefits: Benefits other than leave are subject to change by action of the University of Maryland Eastern Shore, the University System of Maryland, or the State of Maryland. The minimum benefits to be provided to all Contingent Category II employees, on an annual basis, are listed below. These benefits shall be prorated for contracts of less than one year and for less than full-time employment. • Health Insurance - Contingent Category II employees may participate in the State Health Insurance Program and Prescription Plans that are available to state employees. Additionally, Contingent II employees may participate in supplemental retirement plans approved by the State of Maryland and the USM per laws and regulations. • Annual Leave - Five (5) days of accrued annual • Sick Leave - Three (3) days of accrued sick leave • Holidays -Eight (8) holidays – New Year’s Day, Martin Luther King Day, Memorial Day, Independence Day, Labor Day, Thanksgiving Day, the Friday after Thanksgiving Day, and Christmas Day Responsibilities: • Meets with student-athletes to advise them on academically related issues, objective-based study hall requirements and or any other issues. • Advises a diverse population of student-athletes in regard to their academic progress towards degree. This includes pre-advisement for course registrations as it relates to their major requirements. Facilitates student- athletes academic progress by evaluating their needs and developing appropriate academic plans. • Maintains student-athletes academic files that include a record of the advising activity that takes place during each visit. • Monitors student-athletes regarding NCAA rules for satisfactory progress towards degree completion requirements. Supports academic and department programs/functions. • Performs other related duties as assigned. Qualifications: (Preference) • Bachelor's degree. • One year of experience in advising student-athletes. • Demonstrated experience working with individuals from diverse socio- economic, ethnic and cultural background. Knowledge/Skills/Abilities: • Excellent interpersonal and organizational skills with the ability to demonstrate effective oral and written communication skills. • Ability to work non-traditional hours, including occasional nights/weekends, and travel. • Ability to analyze and interpret policy and procedural questions and prioritize workload. • Working knowledge of Intercollegiate Athletics and NCAA rules and regulations. Physical Demands: • May require extended periods of standing, bending, stooping, sitting at desk. • May require lifting. • Requires communication with a variety of constituents externally and internally. • Requires operation of a variety of office equipment.# **Minimum Qualifications**Education: Bachelor’s degree from an accredited college or university. Experience: Two (2) years of professional experience in academic advising, student services, student affairs, or higher education teaching.Other: Additional work experience as defined above may be substituted on a year for year basis for up to four (4) years of the required education.KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, & ABILITIES:Knowledge of the higher education landscape, degree planning and academic policies.Knowledge of curriculum structures, course sequencing, and graduation requirements.Knowledge of FERPA and student privacy regulations. Knowledge of campus resources, support services, and referral processes. Skill in oral and written interpersonal communication.Skill in organization and time-management to manage multiple student caseloads and competing priorities. Skill in using student information systems, databases, and Microsoft Office or similar software.Skill in data tracking and recordkeeping with attention to detail and accuracy.Ability to interpret, explain and apply academic policies and procedures.Ability to employ active listening, problem solving and critical thinking skills.
