Description

The Public Employment Relations Board (PERB) is seeking to hire two (2) student assistants to support with legal support functions. This opportunity is ideal for students interested in gaining practical experience in law office administration and state government. Successful candidates will develop skills that are valuable for entry-level careers in public service and administrative support.

This is a part-time, temporary, non-benefited, student position. Employment in all positions with University Enterprises, Inc. is dependent upon the mutual consent of University Enterprises, Inc. and the employee. This means that either University Enterprises, Inc. or the employee can, at any time, terminate the employment relationship at will, with or without cause.

Depending on the type of position you are applying for, a pre-employment background check consisting of one or more of the following may be conducted: employment history, professional references, criminal check: educational verification (degree, license, or official transcript) or DMV clearance. Applicants will be required to pass required pre-employment checks to the satisfaction of University Enterprises, Inc. (UEI) and the hiring Agency or Department.

UEI does not allow students to hold more than one UEI Job at a time, or work in more than one account per pay period. UEI employees who are considering leaving their current UEI student assistant position for a different UEI student assistant position should inform their supervisor in writing and provide at least a week’s notice.

UEI is not a multi-state employer. UEI only employs candidates who live and work in the state of California. UEI only employs candidates who are considered. If selected for the position you must reside in California and all work must be performed in the state of California.

Prerequisites


Students must be enrolled in at least: six-semester units or nine quarter units for undergraduate students; four-semester units or six quarter units for graduate students.


Students declared major must match the major(s) listed in the job posting.

Majors/Fields of Study

Business/Business Administration (all concentrations), Management, Communication Studies, Psychology, Sociology, Liberal Studies, Public Policy & Administration, Law, Anthropology, Social Science, English, or Journalism.

Work Schedule

F lexible workdays and work hours, Monday – Friday, between 8 AM – 5 PM. The final work schedule will be determined by the supervisor.

Additional Work Schedule

Student Assistant and Graduate Assistant employees generally work up to 24 hours per workweek (Sunday – Saturday) during the academic year and up to 40 hours per workweek during breaks; (winter, spring, and summer).

Compensation

$17.00 - $26.00 per hour.

Minimum Qualifications
  • Minimum cumulative GPA of 2.95.
  • Must complete each term with minimum unit requirements for Undergraduate and Graduate student classifications. Proof will be collected at the end of each Spring and Fall term.
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office Suite, including Word, Excel, and PowerPoint.
  • Ability to quickly learn and effectively use new applications and software systems.
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills, with the ability to communicate professionally with internal staff and external constituents.
  • Strong organizational skills with the ability to prioritize multiple tasks and manage competing deadlines.
  • High level of attention to detail with the ability to process requests accurately and consistently.
  • Ability to assess and prioritize problems, resolve issues independently when possible, and elevate appropriately when needed.
  • Strong interpersonal skills, with the ability to collaborate effectively with peers and staff across departments.
  • Demonstrated commitment to providing excellent customer service.
  • Strong time management skills and the ability to complete assignments with minimal supervision.
  • Ability to maintain confidentiality and handle sensitive information with discretion.
Preferred Qualifications
  • Individuals who are, or have been, a dependent child in foster care, a homeless youth or a formerly incarcerated youth as defined by Government Code section 18220 are encouraged to apply and will be given priority. Please note that prior to appointment, individuals claiming preference under one of these categories will be required to furnish documentation establishing their eligibility.
  • Prior office experience is ideal.
  • Prior experience working on legal support functions is preferred.
  • Basic knowledge of communication and documentation standards.
  • Interest in basic legal concepts, terminology, principles, and procedures.
  • Exceptional customer service skills with a constituent-centric approach which relies on strong active listening skills, tact, and diplomacy.
  • Proactive, flexible, and eager team player with enthusiasm for accuracy and attention to detail.
Duties and Responsibilities
  • Maintain accurate case information in PERB's electronic case management system (ePERB).
  • Carry out case initiation procedures including adding case contacts, assigning the case to a Board agent, and issuing an Introductory letter.
  • Verifying filings comply with PERB regulations to ensure deficiencies are flagged for the Board agent.
  • Calendar events with tools such as Outlook and Zoom to keep track of deadlines and upcoming meetings.
  • Prepare, proof and serve legal communications.
  • Perform other related duties as assigned aid with Legal Support's work.
  • Provide first-rate customer service while responding to or redirecting external inquiries from constituents via the phone, email, or in-person visits.
  • Compile and transmit materials for request under the California Public Records Act.
Physical Requirements

Sit for extended periods; frequently stand and walk; manual dexterity and hand-eye coordination; corrected hearing and vision to normal range; verbal communication; use of office equipment including computer workstations, telephones, calculators, copiers, printers, scanners, shredders, and fax machines; use of basic tools and ability to lift/move up to 40 lbs. with or without a reasonable accommodation.
