The School Bus Driver is responsible for safely operating the school bus according to a set daily schedule. He/she must ensure that the school bus is in good operating condition at all times, pick up and drop off students as per the schedule, maintain order and security on the bus, and obey all laws, regulations, and rules of conduct.
Responsibilities
- Conduct pre- and post-trip inspections to ensure proper operating condition of vehicle and on-board equipment.
- Operate the school bus in a safe and effective manner to minimize risks of injury, property damage, or loss of life.
- Operate the school bus according to all relevant legislation, policies, and procedures.
- Maintain a clean and organized bus and ensure it is safely secured.
- Inform supervisor or dispatch of any maintenance or repair needs.
- Maintain schedules and order on the bus.
- Pick up and transport students as per schedule, take attendance, and ensure students are aware of rules and responsibilities.
- Provide excellent customer service, operate wheelchair lifts, and assist handicapped passengers safely.
- Communicate effectively with dispatch and report behavioral or disciplinary issues.
- Report hazardous conditions along the route and at loading zones.
- Adjust to variables such as weather, traffic, passenger issues, and trip changes.
- Assist in controlling accident or incident scenes.
- Perform other related duties as assigned.
- Attend mandatory meetings and maintain required certifications.
Knowledge
- Ability to operate a school bus safely and responsibly.
- Knowledge of highway and school bus regulations.
- Knowledge of working with children, including those with special needs.
- Knowledge of scheduling systems, procedures, and record keeping.
- Ability to read, write, and speak basic English.
- Effective communication skills.
Qualifications
- Must pass pre-employment physical, including DOT medical card and drug screen.
- Must be 23 years or older with no convictions of driving while suspended or revoked.
- Ability to work varying shifts based on seniority.
- Attend required employee meetings, including safety and training sessions.
