Job summary

The Center for Building Innovation (CBI) seeks a structurally-minded Lab Technician for its Madison, WI facility. The role involves hands-on setup of test rigs, fabrication of fixtures, sensor installation, and data acquisition across mechanical, hydraulic, and electronic systems.

Structural Testing Facility - Lab Technician

If you’re a multi-talented, mechanically-inclined individual who enjoys carpentry, welding, CAD design, processing test data, and technical research, the Center for Building Innovation has the perfect opportunity for you! We are looking for a creative, ambitious self-starter to work in our state-of the-art structural testing facility.

Responsibilities
  • Create and utilize drawings and other resources to set up product testing.
  • Set up monitoring sensors and programming data acquisition equipment to monitor load and movement of structures during testing. This can range from small tests of individual fasteners, to large-scale, complex installations requiring hundreds of sensors.
  • Construct, fabricate, and install test specimens, such as walls and trusses, into testing fixtures. This includes work with wood, steel, and concrete.
  • Fabricate custom machine components for use during testing.
  • Set up and maintain complex equipment including mechanical, hydraulic, and electronic systems.

This position includes primarily physical work similar to that encountered in residential construction, as well as non-physical work involving hydraulics, electronics, and programming. The right candidate must be able to perform accurate, detailed work. Experience in residential construction or the truss manufacturing industry is a plus.

This position may advance to Testing Lead, which involves managing specific testing projects while also directing lab assistants in proper equipment use and test sample construction.

This is a full-time, onsite position. Salary commensurate with experience/qualifications.
