Responsibilities

  • Prepare steel surfaces for painting by cleaning, grinding, sanding, and wiping with thinners.
  • Apply coatings such as primer, paint, and protective finishes to steel components.
  • Use spray guns, brushes, and rollers to apply coating evenly.
  • Inspect surfaces for contaminants, rust, and imperfections before coating.
  • Mix paints, primers, and other coatings per specifications.
  • Ensure coatings are applied according to industry standards and project requirements.
  • Follow safety procedures and wear PPE.
  • Handle, store, and dispose of materials and chemicals per safety/environmental regs.
  • Maintain and clean painting equipment and tools.
  • Perform quality control checks on finished projects.
  • Coordinate with team members and supervisors to meet deadlines.

Job description

The structural steel painter is responsible for applying protective coating and paints to steel structures, ensuring they are adequately prepared and finished to meet aesthetic and functional requirements. This role involves surface preparation, painting, and coating of steel components, following safety protocols, and ensuring the longevity and durability of steel structures in various environments.

  1. Prepare steel surfaces for painting by cleaning, grinding, sanding, and wiping down with thinners.
  2. Apply various types of coatings, including primer, paint, and specialized protective finishes to steel components.
  3. Use spray guns, brushes, and rollers to apply coating efficiently and evenly, ensuring a smooth and uniform finish.
  4. Inspect surfaces to ensure they are free of contaminants, rust, and imperfections before applying coatings.
  5. Mix paints, primers, and other coatings according to specifications.
  6. Ensure all coatings are applied according to industry standards, specifications, and project requirements.
  7. Follow safety procedures and wear appropriate protective equipment.
  8. Handle, store, and dispose of materials, chemicals, and equipment in compliance with safety and environmental regulations.
  9. Maintain and clean painting equipment and tools to ensure optimal performance.
  10. Perform quality control checks on finished projects to verify coatings' proper application and durability.
  11. Coordinate with other team members and supervisors to ensure projects are completed on time and to specifications.
Required Skills and Qualifications
  • High school diploma or GED
  • Previous experience in painting, specifically in structural steel or industrial settings.
  • Knowledge of various paints, primers, thinners, and their application methods.
  • Proficient in using spray guns, brushes, and rollers for coating applications.
  • Strong attention to detail and quality control.
  • Ability to follow safety guidelines and procedures while working with hazardous materials.
  • Ability to work independently or as part of a team.
Working Conditions & Physical Requirements
  • The job requires working in all elements, depending on job location, time of year, heat, cold, rain, and snow.
  • Wear Personal protective equipment (Safety glasses, face shield, gloves) and a respirator when required
  • Repetitive use of arms, hands, and fingers
  • Able to work 8 hours per day, 40 hours per week, overtime as required, and night shifts.
  • Must be able to bend, stoop, squat, crawl, climb, kneel, balance, push, pull, and reach overhead.
  • Good physical stamina and strength (Lift 51 pounds)
  • Constantly moving on your feet.
  • Possess good vision (normal or corrected)
