Job summary

Boeing Defense, Space & Security (BDS) in El Segundo, CA seeks a Senior or Principal Structural & Payload Design Engineer (Level 5 or 6) to lead space vehicle design teams and define integration requirements for flight and non-flight hardware. Relocation is possible for eligible internal candidates, with strong growth opportunities.

The role requires a BS in Engineering and 10+ years in spacecraft/satellite design, with experience across structures, dynamics, thermal, and systems integration.

Qualifications

  • Bachelor of Science degree in Engineering (with a focus on Mechanical, Civil, Aerospace Aeronautical or Material Sciences).
  • 10+ years of experience in spacecraft/satellite system design, development, test and evaluation.

Responsibilities

  • Manage and direct the Structural and Mechanical Space Vehicle Engineering Design teams including Structures, Analysis, Thermal, Dynamics, Mechanical, Propulsion, Solar Array, Mass Properties, and Blankets from requirements, design, verification, and production support as the Space Vehicle Design Integration Leader.
  • Develops Common Non-Recurring Product Definition (C-NRPD) plans and ensures execution of requirements, design layouts, analysis, testing, and assembly integration in a timely manner to support program milestones.
  • Leads and participates in system level trades to ensure the vehicle design meets all physical, mechanical and environmental requirements while accommodating the required payload, power, propulsion, thermal, communications and attitude control system requirements.
  • Defines structural, mechanical, environmental design and integration requirements and its constituent assemblies and components including both flight and non-flight (GSE) hardware.
  • Leads design and manufacturing integration requirements using DFMAT principles.
  • Leads the layout reviews and program level General Arrangement meetings for collaborative engineering across various disciplines; resolves design integration issues between segment IPTs.
  • Approves Interface Control Drawings/Models including Moving Mechanical Assemblies (MMAs).
  • Oversee Critical Clearance Control Plan (CCCP) including definition and verification of Critical Clearance Control List activities (CCCL).
  • Supports and approves manufacturing integration plans, overseeing Digital Mock-Up (DMU) and Virtual Manufacturing (VM) simulation reviews.
  • Leads the development of structural qualification and acceptance test plans.
  • Supports Program milestone reviews (SRR, PDR, CDR, IDR etc.) and Gate Closure/Lien Closures.
  • Supports design non-conformances and resolution during production.
  • Provides program observed lessons learned to aid in continuous improvement.
  • Investigates emerging technologies to develop concepts for future product designs.

This position is expected to be 100% onsite. The selected candidate will be required to work onsite at one of the listed location options.

Basic Qualifications (Required Skills/ Experience)
  • Bachelor of Science degree in Engineering (with a focus on Mechanical, Civil, Aerospace Aeronautical or Material Sciences)
  • 10+ years of experience in spacecraft/satellite system design, development, test and evaluation
Preferred Qualifications (Desired Skills/Experience)
  • Experience with multi-disciplined development in any of the following areas: Space structural and mechanical design and engineering; System integration and integrated system test; Systems Engineering Mechanical systems and vehicle design architecture

Senior (Level 5) Summary pay range: $165,750 - $224,250

Principal (Level 6) Summary pay range: $202,300 - $273,700
