Job summary

IMEG is seeking a Structural Intern for a 10-12 week summer program in Fairfax, VA. You will assist in the analysis, design, and implementation oversight of structural systems across commercial and institutional projects while collaborating with senior engineers and other disciplines.

Qualifications

  • Completed at least 2 years towards a BS degree in Civil/Structural/Architectural Engineering or equivalent.
  • Strong interest in design consulting.
  • Proficient with MS Office (Word, Excel, Outlook).
  • Skilled in AutoCAD and/or Building Information Modeling (BIM).
  • Ability to clearly communicate in oral and written form.

Responsibilities

  • Assist with structural design portions of projects according to code and IMEG standards.
  • Assist with researching project resources.
  • Assist with client relations, project documentation, and permanent records.
  • Coordinate design and scheduling with disciplines (architectural, structural, electrical, mechanical, technology, clerical, suppliers).
  • Document design decisions, meetings, and client instructions while monitoring progress.
  • Review project documents for accuracy and completeness.
  • Prepare and issue addendum information.
  • Conduct periodic job site observations as required by the contract.

This posting is for Summer 2027 Internship opportunities. IMEG is hiring a Structural Intern in Fairfax, VA. Over 10-12 weeks, you’ll assist in the analysis, design, and implementation oversight of structural systems for a variety of building types while working closely with experienced engineers and consultants. In this role, you’ll support project delivery through design assistance, documentation, coordination across disciplines, and periodic job site observations while working within project budgets and client expectations. You’ll contribute across commercial and institutional markets, with exposure to mission critical and data center work in Northern Virginia, contributing to sustainable design goals including SE2050.

What You’ll Do
  • Assist with structural design portions of projects according to code and IMEG standards.
  • Assist with researching project resources.
  • Assist with client relations, project design notebooks, and documentation for permanent record files.
  • Assist with coordinating design and schedule with architectural, structural, electrical, mechanical, technology, clerical, and supplier teams.
  • Assist with documenting design decisions, meetings, and client instructions while monitoring project design progress.
  • Assist with reviewing project documents.
  • Assist with reviewing project documents for accuracy and completeness prior to requesting a final check.
  • Assist with preparing and issuing addendum information.
  • Conduct periodic job site observations and other services as required by the contract services agreement.
What You’ll Bring
  • Completed at least 2 years towards a Bachelor of Science (BS) Degree in Civil, Structural, or Architectural Engineering, or equivalent, required
  • Strong interest in design consulting
  • Proficient with MS Office Suite including, but not limited to, Word, Excel, and Outlook
  • Skilled in AutoCAD and/or Building Information Modeling (BIM) software
  • Ability to clearly communicate in both oral and written communication to individuals or groups
  • Preferred Prior internship experience in the building design consulting industry preferred

Our DC area structural team is driven by mission critical and data center work in Northern Virginia, plus commercial interiors and selective K-12, housing, and hospitality support. The portfolio includes structural support for data center upgrades, warehouse and restaurant fit-outs, core-drill and load reviews, and school HVAC-related structural modifications.

Recent work includes Sabey Data Centers Intergate Campus Building A Core and Shell, Data Center/Mission Critical, and Prince William County Public Schools Bull Run Middle School HVAC System Renovation, Education.

State of Virginia Pay Range

$22.50–$24.50 per hour

The range listed above represents the base pay IMEG reasonably and in good faith expects to pay for this position in the work location identified above at the time of posting. For positions available in multiple locations, the minimums and maximums may vary based on work location. Individual compensation will be determined based on job-related factors, including the candidate’s experience, education, knowledge, skills, abilities, and licensure and certifications.
