Baker Engineering and Risk Consultants, Inc. (BakerRisk®) invites students to join a 8‑month Structural Engineering Co-op in San Antonio and Houston, TX.

You’ll support project managers, perform calculations, and help prepare reports and drawings for blast‑resistant and traditional structures. Qualified candidates are undergrad or grad students in ABET‑accredited Civil-Structural programs, with 3.0+ GPA, proficiency in MATLAB/C++, and familiarity with SketchUp or Inventor.

Qualifications

• Pursuing a bachelor’s or master’s degree with a 3.0+ GPA in Civil-Structural Engineering from an ABET program.
• Familiarity with 3D modeling software SketchUp or Inventor is preferred.
• Strong communication, detail-orientation, and good writing skills required.

Responsibilities

• Assist project managers and technical staff with project work and admin tasks.
• Perform routine engineering calculations and review documentation.
• Research technical issues and prepare/edit presentations and reports.
• Contribute to design concepts and assist with testing and drawings.
• Receive on‑the‑job training and follow defined procedures.

San Antonio & Houston Offices - 2027 Structural Engineering Co-op

BakerRisk provides comprehensive consulting, engineering, laboratory, and full‑scale facility testing services to government agencies and private companies who are involved with hazardous operations or materials.

Dates Of Employment For 2027

• Spring/Summer Term: Monday, January 11th at 9:00 a.m. CST – Friday, August 20th at noon
• Summer/Fall Term: Monday, May 10th at 9:00 a.m. CST – Friday, December 17th at noon

Full time: 40 hours per week

Locations: San Antonio, TX and Houston, TX

Duties And Responsibilities

• Assist project managers and technical staff with project work, business development activities, and organizational tasks.
• May be called upon to perform routine engineering calculations, review documentation, research technical issues, prepare/edit presentations and reports, organize files, review/write software, etc.
• Able to perform specific tasks as assigned by project managers of limited scope. Tasks will typically require knowledge of basic structural engineering principles and techniques commonly employed in the design of classical construction materials including steel, reinforced concrete, masonry, wood, etc.
• Tasks assigned may include hazard analysis, detailed structural design and design concept development, structural component testing, preparation of design specifications, research/accident investigation activity support, structural drawing development and review, checking and reviewing numerical calculations, structural data entry, report preparation, technical presentation development, and other activities
• Receives training in various aspects of work as on-the-job assignment
• Technical decisions will be of routine nature with ample precedent or clearly defined procedures as guidance

Requirements

Pursuing a bachelor’s or master’s degree with a minimal 3.0 GPA in Civil-Structural Engineering or a related discipline from an ABET accredited curriculum or rising Junior or Senior level student.

Qualifications: Preferred

• Familiarity with 3D modeling software (SketchUp and/or Inventor)
• Excellent oral and written communication skills
• Detail-oriented
• MATLAB, C++, or C# programming skills
• Proficiency in MS Office Suite (PowerPoint, Excel, Word, Access)

WHO WE ARE LOOKING FOR

• BS - Juniors and Seniors in structural engineering.
• Masters and PhD candidates.

Experience Gained

• Knowledge and application of dynamic & basic structural engineering principles.
• Experience assisting project managers, completing engineering calculations, developing new and upgraded blast resistant designs, design drawings, engineering reports, and presentations.
• Participate in and witness scale and full‑scale structural testing.
• Develop a research project related to blast resistant structural design.
• Mentorship to build relationships with fellow Co‑ops and other full‑time staff.

SCHEDULE

• 8 months, primarily working in an office with the possibility to support testing at one of two research facilities.
• Co‑ops have very similar tasks and responsibilities to a new hire right out of college & are working on multiple projects at a time, with a variety of project managers.
