Job summary

WHKS & Co is seeking a design engineer to apply Civil Engineering expertise in the design and project management of structural and civil projects in Iowa and surrounding states. This role offers flexibility, teamwork, and a supportive environment with strong compensation and benefits.

Qualifications

• A Bachelor's degree in Civil Engineering is required.
• Iowa P.E. license or ability to obtain within 6 months.
• 5+ years of experience in structural design.
• A valid driver’s license is required.
• Excellent verbal and written communication skills.
• Experience with Microstation, OpenRoads Designer, OpenBridge Designer, MathCad, RCPier, STAAD or MDX is a plus.
• Knowledge of IDOT specifications and procedures is a plus.
• Ability to work as part of a team and manage workload independently.

• Perform bridge inspections including field inspections, documenting conditions, and preparing inspection reports.

• Prepare construction plans and contract documents as well as perform observation services for existing structures and those under construction.
• Prepare scope, budget, and contracts for projects.
• Perform QC/QA reviews on plans and specifications.
• Coordinate and collaborate with clients and WHKS staff to solve challenging engineering tasks.
• Perform bridge inspections which may include:
  • Conducting field inspections of bridges, culverts, and related structures.
  • Documenting structural conditions, deficiencies, and maintenance needs.
  • Preparing and reviewing inspection reports, sketches, and photographic documentation.

Qualifications:

• Bachelors of Science degree in Civil Engineering
• Iowa P.E. license or ability to obtain within 6 months
• 5+ years of experience in structural design
• A valid driver’s license
• Excellent computer and communication skills (both verbal and written) are required
• Experience with Microsoft Office products, Microstation, OpenRoads Designer, OpenBridge Designer, MathCad, RCPier, STAAD or MDX would be an advantage.
• Knowledge of Iowa Department of Transportation (IDOT) specifications and procedures is a plus.
