Job summary

Monroe Environmental is seeking a Structural Engineer to lead analysis, design, and technical support for industrial equipment and supporting structures. You will perform calculations, review drawings, and coordinate with project teams to ensure robust, compliant designs.

A PE license is preferred, with 5+ years' experience in industrial/manufacturing contexts. Proficiency with structural software and knowledge of AISC/ASCE standards are important for success.

Qualifications

Description

Position Summary: The focus of the Structural Engineer is to be responsible for the structural analysis, design, and technical support of industrial equipment and supporting structures. This is accomplished through structural engineering calculations, code-compliant design, drawing review, and collaboration with project engineers, mechanical designers, sales, estimating, customers, shop fabricators, field personnel, and related team members. A Professional Engineer (PE) license, with the ability to provide or coordinate signed and sealed structural calculations and drawings, is preferred.

Responsibilities

• Perform structural analysis and design for industrial equipment and supporting structures.
• Develop engineering calculations for bridges, catwalks, support beams, columns, bracing, equipment anchorage, base plates, pipe and duct supports, lifting lugs, trunnions, lifting beams, and temporary lifting conditions.
• Analyze structures for dead, live, equipment, operating, maintenance, wind, snow, seismic, hydrostatic, transportation, installation, and other applicable loads.
• Determine appropriate load combinations based on governing codes, customer specifications, and project requirements.
• Perform stability evaluations including overturning, sliding, buckling, deflection, and vibration where applicable.
• Perform bolted and welded connection calculations and design base plates, anchor bolts, equipment anchorage, and structural interfaces with concrete foundations.
• Perform or coordinate Finite Element Analysis (FEA) when required for complex equipment or structural conditions.
• Work closely with mechanical engineers, project engineers, designers, and CAD personnel during development of equipment and structural drawings.
• Review customer approval drawings, general arrangement drawings, fabrication drawings, installation drawings, structural steel drawings, and vendor/subcontractor drawings for structural requirements.
• Evaluate existing designs and provide recommendations for structural modifications, reinforcement, repair, or field-fit conditions.
• Provide engineering support to manufacturing and fabrication teams, including review of weld details, material substitutions, fabrication deviations, and nonconformances.
• Assist sales and estimating with technical proposals, preliminary structural concepts, design criteria, and structural engineering requirements for new opportunities.
• Review customer specifications and identify applicable structural codes, design loads, certification requirements.
• Provide or coordinate signed and sealed structural calculations and drawings when required, including coordination with third-party engineers for additional state registrations.
• Support field installation and troubleshooting by evaluating site conditions and providing engineering recommendations for structural modifications.

Requirements

• Bachelor's degree in Civil Engineering, Structural Engineering, or closely related engineering discipline.
• Minimum 5 years of structural engineering experience, preferably involving industrial or manufacturing applications.
• Active Professional Engineer (PE) license preferred.
• Structural engineering and structural steel design experience, preferably in industrial capital equipment, heavy fabrication, water/wastewater, air pollution control, chemical/process equipment, or similar industries.
• Strong knowledge of structural steel member design, connection design, welding, bolted connections, base plates, anchor bolts, wind and seismic loading, equipment loading, and structural stability.
• Working knowledge of applicable codes and standards including AISC, ASCE 7, IBC, AWS D1.1/D1.6, OSHA, and other project-specific requirements.
• Familiarity with AWWA D100, API 650, ASME, ACI, PIP, aluminum design standards, FRP design standards, and international structural codes is beneficial.
• Experience with industrial equipment and structures such as clarifiers, thickeners, tanks, scrubbers, towers, ductwork, equipment supports, platforms, bridges, catwalks, ladders, stairs, and skids are beneficial.
• Experience performing structural calculations and analysis for fabricated equipment and support structures.
• Ability to read and review engineered drawings, fabrication drawings, construction drawings, specifications, and 3D CAD models.
• Experience with structural engineering software such as RISA-3D/RISAConnection, STAAD.Pro, ANSYS, SolidWorks Simulation, Autodesk Structural Analysis, or similar applications is preferred.
• Experience with AutoCAD, SolidWorks, Mathcad, and other engineering software applications is beneficial.
• Experience preparing, reviewing, and certifying structural calculations and drawings is preferred.
• Experience working directly with fabrication shops and providing practical design-for-manufacturing solutions is preferred.
• Periodic travel to customer sites or fabrication facilities may be required for inspections, field troubleshooting, and project meetings.
