Job description

Akima Infrastructure Services, LLC (AIS), is actively seeking Engineering, Professional, Technical, and administrative support personnel as part of our staff augmentation team supporting the Department of Energy at the Y‑12 National Security Complex located in Oak Ridge, Tennessee and the Pantex Plant located in Amarillo, Texas.

Successful candidates will be employees of AIS, a premier government contractor charged with employing highly motivated and well-qualified personnel who can advance Y-12's core mission to ensure a safe, secure, and reliable U.S. nuclear deterrent, which is essential to national security. Though employed by AIS, the employee will take day‑to‑day direction and assignments from Y-12 staff employed directly by the security complex. Pay, benefits, Human Resources, and Employment Management functions are provided by AIS.

Qualified applicants must be a US citizen, at least 18 years of age, and able to meet pre‑employment requirements including any required physicals, drug screen, and/or background investigation to satisfy clearance requirements from the Department of Energy.

Responsibilities

As a Structural Engineer, the candidate will be responsible for:

  • Developing high-quality detailed design packages, provide engineering procurement and field technical support to implement those designs, and provide expertise for troubleshooting and technical assessments of plant facilities.
  • Design involves the preparation of conceptual engineering deliverables such as cost‑estimating bills of material and man‑hour estimates, statements of work, design criteria, and design engineering deliverables.
  • Candidate must effectively and cooperatively work as a team member of an integrated project team, or as a technical lead for a multi‑discipline task and routinely provide input to system engineers and other plant customers.
  • Design engineers will routinely perform walkdowns in the existing plant facilities in order to generate design documents and provide field support to craft personnel.
  • This position will require technical expertise and wide applicating of technical principles, theories, and concepts in the field of Structural Engineering.
  • Structural Engineer will provide self‑performed technical solutions to a wide range of difficult problems through the application of established engineering practices, codes, and standards.
  • Responsibilities will include but not be limited to building evaluations and modifications, seismic analysis and rehab, oversight of outside engineering firms, steel and concrete design, and machine installations.
  • The structural engineer must be proficient with developing structural drawings (plans, sections and details) for various materials of construction (steel, concrete, cold‑formed steel), structural calculations, equipment anchorage, report preparation, drafting (or oversight of drafting), and preparation of construction specifications (generally in the form of general notes on the drawings).
  • Must be familiar with consensus design codes.
  • CAD drafting experience not required but preferred, along with any 3D modeling experience.
  • Structural modeling experience with STAAD Pro is also preferred.
  • The candidate must have the ability to plan, self‑perform, and/or direct all engineering design team activities on a project which include but are not limited to: development of detailed project scope, design time‑lines, functions and requirements, design basis and criteria, design scheduled and tracking, project engineering budget, calculations, drawing generation, research, design review, inter‑discipline design coordination, design approval, design change control, specifications, approval of contractor technical and material submittals and field verification of construction compliance to design.
Qualifications
  • Bachelor's degree in civil or Structural Engineering from a ABET accredited school with a minimum of 10 years' experience (with emphasis on Structural Engineering).
  • An active professional engineering (PE) license is preferred.
  • Requires strong verbal and written communication skills and the ability interface effectively with various clients, production and support organizations, management, and hourly wage employees.
  • Ability to obtain/maintain a DOE Q clearance.
  • Must be willing to work in a production environment.
