Job summary

Newport News Shipbuilding seeks a senior structural engineer to analyze, research and develop structural specifications for metals, non‑metallic or composite materials, focusing on damage tolerance, durability and design allowables.

Responsibilities include leading project teams, mentoring junior staff, presenting to senior leadership and external customers, and using FEMAP, Abaqus, Teamcenter, Hypermesh, ATIS, DDMS and MATLAB; FORTRAN may be learned for legacy software.

Qualifications

• ABET-accredited engineering degree required.
• 9 years of exempt experience with a Bachelor's, 7 years with a Master’s, or 4 years with a Ph.D.
• Experience with FEMAP, Abaqus, Teamcenter, Hypermesh, ATIS, DDMS and MATLAB.
• Ability to learn legacy government software (FORTRAN).

Job description

• Analyzes, researches and develops structural engineering specifications involving metals, non‑metallic or composite structural materials for product design.
• Analyzes damage tolerance, durability, design allowables and structural modeling.
• Specific structural engineering specialties may include dynamics and loads, stability, and stress fatigue and thermal analysis.
• Tools utilized may include CATIA, IDEAS, ProEngineer and a variety of software applications.
• Collaborate with teams of engineers and designers of varying disciplines.
• Oversee several projects, as well as provide guidance and direction to junior engineering staff.
• Presentations to NNS senior leadership, external customers, Navy, government technical warrant holders, and SME’s will be required.

Requirements

• Bachelor's Degree and 9 years of relevant exempt experience; Master’s Degree and 7 years of relevant professional experience; Ph.D. and 4 years of experience.
• Newport News Shipbuilding requires a Bachelor's Degree in engineering from an ABET accredited program.
• Working knowledge and utilization of software/applications: FEMAP, Abaqus, Teamcenter, Hypermesh, ATIS, DDMS, and MATLAB.
• Ability to learn to execute older government‑provided software, i.e. FORTRAN.
