Job summary

Dennis Group is seeking a Structural Engineer-in-training to support the design of food and beverage processing facilities. You will perform calculations, prepare drawings, and help produce design documents and specifications.

Responsibilities include coordinating with other disciplines, reviewing design loads, and performing field measurements. Travel to project sites up to 15 days/year is expected as part of the role.

Qualifications

  • Currently pursuing a Civil or Structural Engineering degree with strong academic record.
  • GPA of 3.0 or higher and relevant coursework or experience in industrial builds.
  • Familiarity with AutoCAD and Revit for structural drafting and drawings; RAM software a plus.

Responsibilities

  • Apply knowledge of materials and construction techniques to a range of projects.
  • Perform hand calculations and create analysis models for structural design tasks.
  • Draft sketches, contract drawings, and specs using AutoCAD and Revit.
  • Review submittals, field measurements, and design loads (gravity/wind/seismic).
  • Coordinate with disciplines, assist in budgeting, and support project documentation.

Job Summary

Dennis Group Structural Engineers ensure structures are durable and safe for our industrial projects that involve designing and building food and beverage process facilities. Our Structural Engineers have strong technical, analytical, design, mathematical, and problem-solving skills. The role is key in designing, permitting, and providing expertise in strength, stability, and stresses for various structures of our construction of new processing facilities and alterations to existing facilities. Members of our structural department have responsibilities that include, but not be limited to:

Responsibilities
  • Apply extensive and diverse knowledge of principles and practices for a wide range of materials and construction techniques.
  • Perform hand calculations and create computer analysis models for structural design tasks.
  • Determine the correct building code
  • Locate any local or site-specific amendments to the building code
  • Document gravity design loads, wind design loads, and seismic design loads
  • Work with and design common structural framing systems (steel, composite steel, joists)
  • Work with and design common foundations systems (Spread footings, drilled piers)
  • Estimate foundation types & sizes and preliminary steel sizes
  • Coordinate structural work with other disciplines
  • Review geotechnical reports
  • Design mat slabs for process tanks, vessels, and silos
  • Design pipe bridges
  • Perform take offs from structural plans
  • Contact potential bidders for preliminary budget estimates
  • Review submittals
  • Field measure existing structures to gather necessary information
  • Draft sketches, contract drawings, and specifications using AutoCAD.
  • Review project documentation for conformity and quality assurance.
  • Review shop drawings, submittals, and calculations
  • Estimate construction costs with quantity take offs and historic costs
  • Conduct field inspections & condition assessments and prepare reports
  • Research structural engineering materials and best practices
  • Support talent growth within our organization
Required Education Skills And Experience
  • Junior, or Senior pursuing a degree in Civil Engineering or Structural Engineering
  • GPA: 3.0 or above
  • Relevant structural experience or schooling in industrial and commercial building structure
  • Experience or schooling performing calculations, creating analysis models for structural designs
  • Experience or schooling in structural and concrete drafting sketches, contract drawings, and specifications using AutoCAD and Revit
  • RAM Structural system and RAM Elements knowledge or experience is a plus
  • EIT / FE desirable
  • Detailed planning and organization skills.
  • Experience with structural analysis software
  • Ability to travel to project sites as needed (15 days a year)

  • Prolonged periods sitting at a desk and working on a computer.
  • Must be able to lift-up to 15 pounds at times.
