Job summary

KPFF is seeking aStructural Engineer with 4+ years of experience to join our Birmingham team. You will manage projects from concept through construction, collaborating with engineers, BIM professionals, and clients across the country.

The role emphasizes leadership, strong communication, and adherence to codes (IBC, ASCE, ACI, AISC). We offer mentorship and career growth in a national firm with local team support.

Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s degree in Civil or Architectural Engineering; PE licensed.
  • 4+ years of structural engineering design experience; project management is a plus.
  • Proficiency with ETABS, RAM Structural System, RISA-3D or similar.
  • Experience with BIM software such as Revit; strong knowledge of IBC/ASCE/ACI/AISC codes.

Responsibilities

  • Manage all aspects of structural engineering projects (planning, scheduling, budgeting).
  • Perform structural analysis and design for various building types.
  • Collaborate with clients to understand goals and maintain communication.
  • Participate in site investigations, feasibility studies, and structural assessments.
  • Prepare and review drawings, calculations, specs, and reports per building codes.
  • Monitor progress, identify risks, and implement mitigation strategies.
  • Support safety and environmental regulations and foster a safe culture.

The Opportunity

We are seeking an adaptive and thoughtful Structural Engineer with 4+ years of experience to join our growing Birmingham team. In this role, you will contribute to structural engineering projects from concept through construction while continuing to grow as a licensed professional. You will work with experienced engineers, BIM professionals, and clients, with mentorship and career support from KPFF’s engineering team. You will take on meaningful project responsibilities, strengthen your technical and leadership skills, and contribute to impactful work locally and nationwide.

What You’ll Do
  • Manage all aspects of structural engineering projects, including planning, scheduling, budgeting, and resource allocation
  • Perform structural analysis and design for a variety of building types and materials
  • Collaborate with clients to understand project goals and maintain clear, consistent communication throughout the project lifecycle
  • Participate in feasibility studies, site investigations, and structural assessments, as needed
  • Prepare, review, and coordinate engineering drawings, calculations, specifications, and reports in accordance with applicable building codes
  • Monitor project progress, identify risks or challenges, and implement mitigation strategies to support successful outcomes
  • Support KPFF’s mission of creating a perpetual organization built on happy people, happy clients, strong financial outcomes, and great engineering
  • Promote compliance with health, safety, and environmental regulations while fostering a culture of safety
Professional Background
  • Bachelor’s degree in Civil Engineering or Architectural Engineering (Master’s preferred)
  • Professional Engineer (PE) license required
  • Minimum 4 years of structural engineering design experience (project management experience is a plus)
  • Proficiency with structural analysis and design software such as ETABS, RAM Structural System, RISA-3D, or similar
  • Strong knowledge of applicable building codes and standards (IBC, ASCE, ACI, AISC)
  • Experience with BIM software such as Revit
  • Strong communication and interpersonal skills
  • Ability to manage multiple priorities and meet deadlines
