Job summary

VHB is seeking a Structural Engineer - Building Design to join our Washington DC and Tysons Corner teams. The role focuses on planning, analysis, and detailing of new structures and renovations, with emphasis on transportation-related buildings such as rail stations and parking facilities.

Qualifications

  • Bachelor's degree in civil engineering required; master's preferred (may substitute for 1 year of experience).
  • Minimum 5-8 years of structural engineering experience required.
  • Licensed PE or ability to obtain within 6 months.
  • Experience with new structural building construction and structural building renovations on shallow and deep foundation.
  • Proficient in the design of steel and concrete structures; familiarity with wood/heavy timber is a plus.
  • Experience with transit projects owned by agencies such as WMATA, VRE, Amtrak, or similar is preferred.

About the Position

Structural Engineer - Building Design | Hybrid

As part of our structures growth across our footprint, we're adding structural engineer who would serve an important role in planning, analysis, design, detailing of new building structures and existing building renovation, with a current focus on transportation-related buildings such as rail & transit stations and parking facilities. The ideal candidate should possess a "can-do" attitude, excellent verbal and written communication skills, and an ability to work independently as well as with a team in a dynamic, fast paced, and fun environment. The position includes significant opportunities for personal and professional development and growth within VHB's emerging building design practice in Washington DC and Tysons Corner VA.

Responsibilities
  • Develops, organizes, and implements structural planning, analysis, preliminary and final design document preparation for transportation related building structures
  • Supports and mentors junior team members in the development of design plans, technical oversight, specifications, design calculations, load ratings, cost estimates, reports, final bid packages, etc. Provides technical oversight and review of structural designs.
  • Monitors of project budgets and schedules
  • Assists with proposals and presentations for rail/transit pursuits
  • Support building structural projects across VHB's footprint
Skills & Abilities
  • Extensive knowledge of concepts, practices, and procedures in structural building engineering
  • Must possess strong technical skills with knowledge of various building structural systems and codes
  • Excellent verbal, written, and interpersonal communication skills

  • Proficiency in the use of structural engineering 3D Finite Analysis and BIM software such as RISA 3D, STAAD pro, SAP2000,RAM Concept, RAM Structural System, MathCAD, Revit, AutoCAD, and Microstation
Qualifications
  • Bachelor's degree in civil engineering required, master's degree preferred (may substitute for 1 year of experience)
  • Minimum 5-8 years of structural engineering experience required.
  • Licensed PE (Professional Engineer) or ability to obtain within 6 months
  • Experience with new structural building construction and structural building renovations on shallow and deep foundation
  • Proficient in the design of steel and concrete structures with a solid understanding of the International Code and local codes; familiarity with wood and heavy timber structures is a plus.
  • Experience working on station projects owned and operated by transit agencies such as WMATA, VRE, Amtrak, and/or other rail transit adjacencies preferred
  • Familiarity with Design-Bid-Build and Design-Build project delivery is a plus

Hiring Salary Range - $110,000 - $150,000+. However, the final agreed-upon compensation is based on individual education, qualifications, and experience. In addition, VHB offers a holistic benefits package which can be found here.
