Job summary

VHB in the Washington, D.C. region seeks a Senior Structural Bridge Engineer to join the Tysons Corner team in a hybrid role. You will work on complex bridge projects, develop digital bridge models, and support multidisciplinary infrastructure initiatives.

The role emphasizes design excellence, project leadership, and collaboration across highway, pedestrian, and rail structures while mentoring junior staff and delivering through a flexible hybrid environment.

Qualifications

  • 8+ years of structural bridge/transportation design experience.
  • BS in Civil Engineering with structural emphasis.
  • PE license is required.

Responsibilities

  • Perform structural modeling, design, and oversight for bridge and transportation projects.
  • Prepare construction documents, plans, specs, estimates, and calculation packages.
  • Provide technical and training support to staff; lead QA reviews of documents and reports.
  • Assist in proposals, contracts, and scheduling; provide project management support.
  • Lead inspections/evaluations and load capacity ratings; review drawings.
  • Coordinate among groups (highway, pedestrian, railroad, marine, energy projects).
  • Develop technical reports and proposal sections.

Senior Structural Bridge Engineer | Washington D.C. | Tysons Corner, VA | Hybrid

Responsibilities
  • Perform structural modeling, design, and oversight for bridge and other transportation infrastructure projects
  • Prepare construction documents, including plans, specifications, estimates, and calculation packages
  • Provide technical and training support to structural engineering staff
  • Conduct quality assurance reviews of project construction documents, engineering reports, etc.
  • Assist in preparing qualification packages, proposals, and/or contracts involving technical approach, costs, and scheduling
  • Provide project management support
  • Lead structural inspections/evaluations and associated load capacity ratings
  • Review fabrication drawings and provide construction plan reviews
  • Assist project managers with coordination between various groups working on structural projects (e.g., highway, pedestrian, and railroad bridges; commuter rail stations; marine structures; energy projects; retaining walls)
  • Participate in the proposal process, determining client requirements and developing plans, specifications, quantities of materials, construction cost estimates, reports, final bid packages, and related documents.
  • Prepare technical reports and sections of proposals and/or contracts
Skills & Abilities
  • Experience completing engineering studies, design reports, compiling contract documents, and developing contract plans in conformity with accepted engineering standards and procedures
  • Strong familiarity with any of the following structural engineering software (e.g., Mathcad, FB-MultiPier, ATLAS, STAAD Pro, LARSA 4D, AASHTOWare, MDX, SP Column, MerlinDASH, FDOT Structures Design Programs, etc.)
  • Model-based design experience is a strong plus, including:
    • Bentley OpenBridge and OpenRoads
    • AutoCAD Civil 3D and Revit/Infraworks/Inventor
  • Self-motivated with excellent attention to detail and quality
  • Strong technical skills in bridge/structural design and critical thinking
  • Strong organizational and time management skills
  • Effective and comfortable in a highly collaborative team environment
  • Demonstrated excellence in verbal presentations and technical writing
  • Experience with and motivation to lead and mentor junior staff
  • Project management and mentorship skills
Minimum Qualifications:
  • 8+ years of structural bridge/transportation design experience required
  • B.S. in Civil Engineering required (structural emphasis preferred)
  • PE license required

The full-time annual base salary range for this position is $120,000 to $170,000 if located in the DC Metro area. The base salary offered will be determined based on job-related factors, including geographic location, internal equity, experience, credentials, skills, education, work schedule, and other factors permitted by law. The posted salary range reflects base pay only. Additional compensation and benefits available to eligible employees are outlined in our Total Rewards Program.

Annual base salary is one component of VHB's Total Rewards package. In addition to base pay, eligible employees may receive annual incentive compensation bonuses, spot bonuses, and merit-based salary increases, providing opportunities to increase earnings beyond base pay.
