Structural Engineer - Bridge/Tunnel/Heavy Highway/Steel/Concrete - Transportation Systems Department

MUST BE A LICENSED PROFESSIONAL ENGINEER (PE) BY THE STATE OF TEXAS

HYBRID/REMOTE BASED (as long as reside in the state of Texas)

BGE is seeking a Structural Engineer for the Transportation department. Ideally based in Central Texas, but open to hybrid remote work as long as residing in Texas. Central Texas offices include: Austin, TX (South Austin or North Austin/Round Rock) or San Antonio (San Pedro Ave).

Responsibilities:
  • Perform structural engineering related to transportation and public works projects, including tunnels, access shafts, heavy highway construction, reinforced concrete, structural steel, prestressed concrete, foundation analysis and design, complex retaining walls, and maintenance/hydraulics access junction boxes.
  • Focus on highway bridge design: overpasses, flyovers, girders, prestressed concrete, steel design, plate girders, and heavy bridges.
  • Develop initial structural design concepts for major project phases or oversee the structural engineering work on projects of varying scope.
  • Maintain in-depth knowledge of ACI, AISC, Minimum Design Loads for Structures, ASCE 7, and AASHTO LRFD Bridge Specifications; familiarity with AREMA is a plus.
  • Use structural software such as STAAD, MDX, CSi, LEAP, LPILE+, Bentley OpenBridge, among others.
  • Plan, schedule, coordinate, and supervise structural engineering tasks, ensuring compliance with project timelines and standards, and coordinate with local agencies.
  • Resolve complex engineering problems involving design conflicts, material limitations, and coordination challenges.
  • Perform additional duties as assigned by senior staff or project managers.
Requirements:
  • Bachelor's degree in civil engineering or related field with emphasis on Structural Engineering.
  • PE license in Texas or ability to obtain within 60 days of hire.
  • Minimum of 6+ years of progressive civil/structural engineering experience.
  • Experience with TxDOT plans, specifications, and estimates.
  • Experience with water/wastewater, tunnels, drainage, marine, rail, or airport structures is a plus.
  • Deep knowledge of relevant industry standards and codes; familiarity with AREMA is advantageous.
  • Proficiency with structural modeling software.
  • Excellent communication skills, both written and verbal.
  • In-office work required.
