Job summary

Moffatt & Nichol is seeking a Structural Engineer with a bridge focus in Virginia. The role involves design and rehabilitation of bridge structures, coordination across disciplines, and leadership of project tasks in a dynamic team environment.

Qualified candidates will have a Civil Engineering degree (Master's preferred), PE registration, and 10+ years of bridge/marine design experience, with proficiency in STAAD or equivalent software and MicroStation/AutoCAD.

Qualifications

  • Bachelor's degree in Civil Engineering or related discipline required; Master's degree in Structural Engineering or Civil Engineering with structural emphasis preferred but not required.
  • 10+ years of design experience of bridge or marine structures; design experience in both is a plus.
  • PE registration required.
  • Prior experience of working on VDOT or other DOT projects preferred.
  • Experience using Microsoft Office (Outlook, Word, Excel, PowerPoint) MathCAD and Microstation (or AutoCAD) required.
  • Experience using STAAD (required); SAP2000, CSiBridge, LARSA 4D, DESCUS, Bentley LEAP Bridge Suite (preferred).
  • All new hires will be required to successfully complete and pass a pre-employment background check in compliance with NIST 800-171.

Responsibilities

  • Develops plans, specifications, and inspection reports as needed.
  • Design of structures in civil transportation including bridges, and other structures such as culverts, retaining walls and sound walls; maintain quality control and complete projects on time and within budget.
  • Helps resolve design problems that may include field investigation or inspections, detailed design work, and checking of design computations.
  • Calculates quantity and cost estimates.
  • Will, at times, lead project tasks by coordinating, scheduling, and supervising the work of team members.
  • Work closely with other disciplines on multi-disciplinary projects.
  • As a task leader, has frequent, direct interaction with the client at a staff and project management level.

Structural Engineer - Bridge Focus

As part of the Structural Group, the Structural Engineer will be self‑motivated, committed to high‑quality work performance, capable of being self‑sufficient, must have excellent planning and communication skills, and the ability to work with other staff in a project team environment. Working conditions

Majority of work is office based. Some site visits may be required which may necessitate navigating unpaved or natural terrain while carrying equipment.

Base salary range

$120,000 to $160,000 based on years of experience, level of education obtained, professional registration, and meeting the required qualifications in the job description.

Base salary range only applicable for candidates who will be hired and working in the Virginia market.
