Job summary

Thomas & Hutton in Charlotte, NC invites a licensed structural engineer to join our collaborative team. You will lead design and analysis for industrial, commercial, municipal, and marine projects while mentoring junior staff and maintaining rigorous client service.

You bring a PE license, 8+ years of experience, and proficiency in RISA, SAP2000, AutoCAD, and Revit; strong knowledge of concrete, steel, timber, and masonry; and the ability to manage multiple tasks on time and within budget.

Qualifications

  • Bachelor's degree in Civil Engineering with a structural focus.
  • PE license required; SE certification strongly preferred.
  • 8+ years of structural design experience.
  • Proficiency with structural analysis software (RISA, SAP2000).
  • Experience with AutoCAD and Revit.
  • Knowledge of concrete, wood, steel, and masonry design.
  • Experience with MS Office and ENERCALC.
  • Strong communication and project management skills.

Responsibilities

  • Perform structural analysis and design for diverse projects.
  • Design structures including piers, bridges, buildings, and more.
  • Prepare construction documents using Revit and AutoCAD.
  • Ensure designs comply with codes and project standards.
  • Perform structural condition assessments and reports.
  • Provide construction administration and site coordination.
  • Coordinate with clients, PMs, and other design disciplines.
  • Peer review calculations, drawings, and reports.
  • Mentor engineers and interns in the structural dept.
  • Manage project tasks to meet scope, schedule, budget, and quality.

Structural Engineer

What you'll do:
  • Perform structural analysis and design for industrial, commercial, municipal, marine, institutional, residential, and energy projects
  • Design a variety of structures, including treatment plants, bulkheads, piers, wharves, bridges, buildings, drainage and water-control structures, marinas, pump stations, monuments, and specialty equipment foundations
  • Prepare construction documents, including drawings in Revit and AutoCAD, calculations, technical specifications, and design deliverables
  • Ensure designs comply with applicable building codes, local amendments, and project standards
  • Perform structural condition assessments of existing structures and prepare detailed reports
  • Provide construction administration services, including submittal reviews, site visits, contractor coordination, and responses to technical questions
  • Coordinate regularly with clients, project managers, and other design disciplines throughout project delivery
  • Perform peer reviews of calculations, drawings, specifications, and technical reports
  • Mentor and support engineers and engineering interns within the structural department
  • Manage project tasks to meet scope, schedule, budget, and quality expectations
What you bring:
  • Bachelor's degree in Civil Engineering with a structural focus
  • Professional Engineer (PE) license required; Structural Engineer (SE) certification strongly preferred
  • 8+ years of structural design experience
  • Proficiency with structural analysis and finite element modeling software, primarily RISA and SAP2000
  • Strong knowledge of structural design principles and experience with concrete, wood, structural steel, and masonry
  • Experience with AutoCAD and Revit
  • Proficiency with Microsoft Office, Mathcad, Excel, and ENERCALC
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills, with the ability to interact effectively with clients and project teams
  • Proven ability to manage multiple assignments, prioritize workflow, and complete tasks within budget
  • Strong problem-solving skills and attention to detail
  • Ability to perform field work for assessments and construction observation in a variety of environments
  • Ability to work independently and collaboratively as part of a team
  • Excellent time-management skills and ability to meet deadlines
  • Willingness to periodically travel to other offices
