Job Summary

The successful candidate will be highly organized, have effective verbal and written communication skills, maintain discretion and confidentiality, manage time effectively, be proactive, and be willing to continually learn new duties and skills.

Job Duties
  • Structural Analysis: conduct in depth analysis of structures, such as mechanical components and assemblies, to ensure their integrity, safety, and performance, assessing factors like stress, strain, deformation, fatigue, and load distribution.
  • Finite Element Analysis (FEA): model and simulate structural behavior under various conditions and loads using FEA software (ANSYS preferred), aiding in predicting how a structure will respond to different forces and helping optimize designs.
  • Material Selection: recommend suitable materials for construction or manufacturing based on mechanical properties, durability, and cost‑effectiveness, while considering project requirements.
  • Design Evaluation: collaborate with design teams to evaluate and refine structural designs, providing feedback to ensure designs meet safety and performance standards.
  • Load Analysis: determine and analyze external loads, such as dynamic and thermal forces, and their effects on structures, calculating stresses and strains to assess potential weaknesses.
  • Failure Analysis: investigate structural failures or anomalies, identify root causes, potentially performing site visits and forensic engineering, and recommend repairs or improvements.
  • Computer-Aided Design (CAD): utilize CAD software to create detailed drawings and models of structural components, including connections, supports, and load‑bearing elements.
  • Documentation and Reporting: maintain comprehensive records of structural analyses, design changes, and project progress; communicate findings and recommendations through reports and presentations.
  • Collaboration: work closely with multidisciplinary teams, including engineers, machinists, and project managers, to ensure structural requirements align with overall project goals.
  • Innovation and Research: stay up‑to‑date with advancements in structural engineering, materials, and analysis.
Basic Qualifications
  • BS degree in Mechanical, Aerospace, Civil, or Structural Engineering plus a minimum of 3 years’ experience performing structural design and/or stress analysis work, or an MS degree plus at least one year of applicable experience.
  • Must be able to obtain and maintain a Department of Defense Secret level security clearance and access to the AEDC local area network.
  • Due to Air Force Security requirements, U.S. Citizenship is required for employment at AEDC.
Preferred Qualifications
  • Education in fundamental engineering and science, and advanced knowledge of mathematics, algorithms, and computer languages.
  • Ability to work in a team developing and applying FEA models using software such as ANSYS, ABAQUS, etc.
  • Demonstrated technical knowledge of developing computational engineering methods and applying structural tools to engineering problems.
What We Offer
  • Competitive salaries
  • Continuing education assistance
  • Multiple healthcare benefits packages
  • 401K with employer matching
  • Paid time off (PTO) along with a federally recognized holiday schedule
