Job summary

Burns & McDonnell is seeking a Staff Structural Designer in Kansas City, MO to plan, evaluate sites, and prepare proposal and construction documents for diverse projects.

The role requires detailed 2D/3D drafting of structural systems, use of Tekla Structures, AutoCAD, Revit, and Navisworks, and strong team collaboration with engineers and project managers. Competitive compensation and ESOP participation are offered.

Qualifications

• Bachelor's degree in drafting technology or related field with 7 years related experience, or an Associate Degree with 8 years related experience, or 9 years progressive detailing and design experience.
• Advanced understanding of design software such as Tekla Structures, AutoCAD, Revit Civil, Navisworks and Excel to develop the design deliverables.
• Experience with Tekla Structures is preferred.
• Advanced knowledge in design, calculations and design systems.
• Advanced knowledge in the theory and practices of structural discipline; able to relate to other disciplines on projects.
• Ability to work collaboratively with Project Managers, Engineers and Designers in a multi-discipline team.
• Excellent written and verbal communication skills.
• Strong analytical and problem-solving skills, and attention to detail.

Responsibilities

• Perform detailed construction drawings for steel and reinforced concrete structures using specifications, calculations, sketches, drawings, and project standards.
• Produce a full range of drawing production work, including analysis, design layout and calculations on non-routine tasks.
• Execute designs on projects for power generation clients from modifications to new facilities.
• Perform 2D drafting and 3D modeling tasks with proper engineering standards.
• Execute rough designs, redlines, and mark-ups on ongoing projects.
• Prepare structural calculations and apply design codes and specifications.
• Design structural elements and details; complete and review drawings within scope, budget, and schedule.
• Incorporate schedules, budgets, and project criteria into structural designs and layouts.
• Organize and maintain revisions of drawings and project files.
• Perform other duties as assigned and comply with policies and standards.

Description

A Staff Structural Designer will perform various phases of planning, site evaluations, and preparation of proposal and construction documentation and structural plans as part of a project team. This position will work on various projects with a diverse portfolio of project types and clients.

• Perform detailed construction drawings for steel and reinforced concrete structures using structural specifications, engineering calculations, sketches, detailed drawings, and design information according to project standards and procedures.

• Produce a full range of drawing production work, including problem analysis, design layout, and calculations on non-routine assignments of substantial variety and complexity.

• Execute designs on a variety of projects pertaining to power generation clients ranging from facility modifications to new facilities.

• Perform 2D drafting and 3D modeling tasks. Design will be prepared using proper engineering standards and procedures.

• Execute a variety of assignments using prescribed methods and standard techniques, including drawing sequence and presentation, sizing various system components, and refining rough sketches.

• Execute rough designs or sketches and redlines or mark-ups on ongoing projects.

• Prepare structural calculations. Interpret and apply design codes and specifications related to design requirements.

• Design structural elements and details.

• Complete and review design drawings within scope, budget, and schedule.

• Incorporate schedules, budgets, and project criteria into structural design and layouts.

• Organize and maintain all revisions of project drawings, plot files, and project-related information in a logical and well-structured manner.

• Performs other duties as assigned.

• Complies with all policies and standards.

Qualifications

• Advanced understanding of design software such as: Tekla Structures, AutoCAD, Revit Civil, Navisworks , and Excel to develop the design deliverables. Experience with Tekla Structures is preferred.

• Advanced knowledge in design, calculations and design systems.

• Advanced knowledge in the theory and practices of structural discipline; competent in the fundamental concepts of other disciplines as they relate to the assigned discipline; and capable of operating related discipline design software necessary to execute production tasks.

• Ability to work collaboratively with others (Project Managers, Engineers and Designers) in a multi-discipline project team environment to resolve design or drawing issues as appropriate and to accomplish objectives.

• Excellent written & verbal communication skills.

• Strong analytical and problem-solving skills, and attention to detail.

Compensation

$100,000.00-155,000.00 Yearly

The expected compensation range for this position is displayed in compliance with all local/state regulations. The expected compensation range for this position is based on a number of factors, including but not limited to: individual education, qualifications, prior work experience and work location. The total annual compensation package will consist of a base salary and eligibility to participate in our discretionary year-end incentive bonus program.
