Job summary

Canam Steel Corporation is seeking a Structural Engineer to design and check building components such as steel joists and metal deck in line with contract documents and codes. You will use AutoCAD and other tools to ensure efficient workmanship and project alignment.

Qualifications

• Bachelor’s degree in Civil, Structural or Architectural Engineering or equivalent.
• Professional licensure or qualifications for licensure preferred.
• Minimum 2 years of joist or consulting engineering/building design experience.
• Ability to read, analyze, and interpret drawings, specifications, and procedures.

Job description

Design and check building components – steel joists and metal deck – in accordance with contract
documents to meet industry codes, manufacturing efficiencies, and shop schedules while being consistent with our corporate mission, values and department objectives.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS

• Perform structural steel design to ensure individual truss members and welds meet the requirements of applicable specifications and codes (SJI, SDI, AISC, AWS, etc.).
• Verify specification of steel deck based on requirements presented in the contract documents.
• Design building components through the use of computer software and supplementary tools.
• Redesign members for greater economy and compare design weight with sales weight to maximize profitability.
• Review contract documents and drafting work for completeness and proper depiction of special loading conditions.
• Generate shop fabrication documents and clarify and resolve questions from the fabrication facility.
• Understand CSC’s products and processes and contribute to improvement activities.
• Communicate and resolve issues with the design team, customer, and field personnel .
• Meet shop schedule requirements and coordinate with project managers for customer requests.
• Maintain a positive work atmosphere by behaving and communicating in an effective manner with customers, coworkers, and supervisors.
• Performs other job duties as assigned by supervisor.
• Regular and reliable attendance.

REQUIREMENTS

• Bachelor’s degree in Civil, Structural or Architectural Engineering with preference for structural emphasis.
• Professional licensure, or appropriate qualifications to obtain future licensure preferred.
• Minimum of 2 years of relevant experience in joist or consulting engineering/building design.
• Ability to read, analyze, and interpret drawings, specifications, and technical procedures.
• Clear understanding of all steel designations on contract drawings.
• Ability to take a medium complexity project through the entire design and check process including but not limited to verifying the bill of material from the detailer, interpretation of relevant loading and geometric requirements, design of CSC products, creation of requisitions for production, and development of a calculation package for the customer.
• Capacity to generate engineering reviews and check both easy and medium difficulty work produced by others.
• Ability to develop calculations and repair details for typical field or shop issues.
• Strong communication skills, both written and verbal, with the ability to communicate with both internal and external customers.
• PC skills to include the following software: AutoCAD and Microsoft Suite of Products. Revit or BlueBeam skills a plus.

Compensation is based on experience and skill set.Candidates may beofferedaJob TitleII, III, or IV role, depending on experience and qualifications.

• General office environment.
• May require occasional exposure to production area with airborne particles, loud noises, and extreme heat and cold. Personal protection equipment is required when entering manufacturing plant.
