Job summary

Advanced Overhead Systems, proudly part of Flatiron Crane, seeks a Structural Crane Engineer to design and analyze crane systems, runways, and lifting equipment with CAD tools for manufacturable results. You will perform structural calculations, develop fabrication drawings, and ensure designs comply with applicable codes while collaborating with project teams and field personnel.

Qualifications

• Bachelor’s degree in Civil, Structural, or Mechanical Engineering.
• Experience with structural design, steel structures, cranes or heavy equipment.
• Proficient in CAD software (AutoCAD, SolidWorks, Inventor).
• Familiarity with AISC/ASME CMAA AIST standards.

Responsibilities

• Perform structural design and analysis for overhead cranes, crane runways, support structures, lifting devices, platforms, and related equipment.
• Develop engineering drawings, layouts, fabrication details, and design documentation using AutoCAD, SolidWorks, Inventor, or similar CAD software.
• Perform structural calculations for beams, columns, connections, welds, bolted connections, and other load-bearing components.
• Evaluate existing crane and structural systems to determine capacity, condition, and requirements for modifications or upgrades.
• Review crane loading, wheel loads, reactions, deflection, fatigue, and other structural considerations associated with material handling equipment.
• Develop designs that consider manufacturability, fabrication, installation, serviceability, and field conditions.

Position Description

Job Summary:

The Structural Crane Engineer is responsible for the structural design, analysis, and development of crane systems, runway structures, lifting equipment, and related components. This position combines structural engineering principles with hands-on CAD design to develop safe, practical, and manufacturable solutions for new equipment, modifications, and modernization projects.

Duties & Responsibilities:

• Perform structural design and analysis for overhead cranes, crane runways, support structures, lifting devices, platforms, and related equipment.
• Develop engineering drawings, layouts, fabrication details, and design documentation using AutoCAD, SolidWorks, Inventor, or similar CAD software.
• Perform structural calculations for beams, columns, connections, welds, bolted connections, and other load-bearing components.
• Evaluate existing crane and structural systems to determine capacity, condition, and requirements for modifications or upgrades.
• Review crane loading, wheel loads, reactions, deflection, fatigue, and other structural considerations associated with material handling equipment.
• Develop designs that consider manufacturability, fabrication, installation, serviceability, and field conditions.
• Review customer drawings, specifications, site information, and existing conditions to develop appropriate engineering solutions.
• Prepare and review fabrication drawings, assembly drawings, bills of materials, and other technical documentation.
• Work closely with Project Management, Manufacturing, Service, Installation, and Sales teams throughout the design and execution of projects.
• Provide engineering support to fabrication and field teams to resolve design or installation issues.
• Participate in site visits to collect measurements, evaluate existing structures, and support project execution as needed.
• Ensure designs comply with applicable engineering codes, standards, and company requirements, including AISC, ASME, CMAA, AIST, and applicable building codes.
• Review designs and drawings for accuracy, constructability, and compliance with project requirements.
• Support continuous improvement and standardization of engineering calculations, drawings, and design practices.
• Perform other engineering duties and special projects as assigned.

Position Requirements

Qualifications:

• Bachelor’s degree in Civil Engineering, Structural Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, or a related engineering discipline.
• Experience with structural design, steel structures, cranes, material handling equipment, or heavy industrial equipment preferred.
• Strong proficiency with CAD software, such as AutoCAD, SolidWorks, Inventor, or similar programs.
• Understanding of structural steel design, load paths, connections, welds, bolted connections, and fabrication practices.
• Ability to read and interpret engineering drawings, specifications, and technical documentation.
• Experience performing or reviewing structural calculations and engineering analysis.
• Familiarity with AISC, ASME, CMAA, AIST, or similar industry standards preferred.
• Experience with structural analysis software is a plus.
• Strong problem-solving skills with the ability to develop practical engineering solutions for both new and existing equipment.
• Ability to communicate effectively with engineering, manufacturing, field personnel, customers, and other project stakeholders.
• Ability to manage multiple engineering projects and priorities simultaneously.
• EIT certification or PE license is preferred but not required.
• Ability to travel to customer or project sites as needed.
