Job summary

Northrop Grumman Space Sector seeks a Structural Analysis Engineer – Level 2 in San Diego, CA. The role focuses on developing and analyzing composite components and test tooling, collaborating with Design, Manufacturing, Test and other Engineering functions to ensure successful hardware delivery.

The candidate will perform FEA for normal modes, static and dynamic stresses, thermoelastic effects and material characterization, joining a diverse team that values curiosity and innovation.

Qualifications

• BS in Science, Technology, Engineering or Mathematics with 2+ years of experience
• Experience with finite element modeling
• Knowledge of structural analysis for aerospace structures containing metals, sandwich panels, composites, plastics and bonded joints

Responsibilities

• Assess structural integrity of metallic and composite structures using FEA and traditional methods
• Collaborate with design, manufacturing and test teams to verify design solutions meeting requirements
• Generate finite element models and perform static, dynamic, thermo-elastic and moisture-related analyses
• Support development of hardware from preliminary to detailed design and testing
• Translate test data into analysis input properties and material capabilities
• Prepare presentations summarizing structural assessment results for reviews
• Assist in disposition of discrepant hardware and anomalies

Northrop Grumman Space Sector has an opening for a Structural Analysis Engineer – Level 2 to join our team of qualified, diverse individuals. This position will be located in San Diego, California. This position is 100% onsite and cannot accommodate telecommute work.

Northrop Grumman Mission Enabling Products (MEP) Business Unit designs, builds, and delivers space, defense and aviation-related systems to customers around the world. Our main products include satellites and associated space components and services, launch vehicles and related propulsion systems, missile products, subsystems and defense electronics, precision weapons, armament systems, and advanced aerospace structures.

As a Mechanical Analysis Engineer, you will develop and analyze composite components, assemblies, and associated test tooling. You will collaborate with Design, Manufacturing, Test, and other Engineering functions to ensure successful execution and delivery of hardware.

Job responsibilities include, but are not limited to, the following:

• Assess structural integrity of metallic and composite structures using traditional closed form solutions, as well as finite element analysis (FEA)
• Interact with design and development teams (teams include specialists in Design, Quality, Materials, Manufacturing) to create and verify creative design solutions that meet all requirements (technical, cost, schedule)
• Generate Finite Element Models and perform FEA for normal modes, linear static stress, dynamic response/stress, thermo-elastic distortion, and hygroscopic distortion
• Support development of fight hardware from preliminary through detailed design, drawing release, manufacturing, integration, verification testing, and transportation
• Reduce material characterization test data into analysis input properties and material capability properties
• Prepare and make presentations summarizing structural assessment results for internal review boards and external customer design reviews
• Assist in assessment and disposition of discrepant hardware and hardware anomalies

Basic Qualifications:

• Bachelor of Science (BS) in a Science, Technology, Engineering or Mathematics (STEM) discipline with a minimum of 2 years of experience
• Experience with finite element modeling
• Knowledge of structural analysis for aerospace structures containing metals, sandwich panels, composite materials, plastics and bonded joints

Preferred Qualifications:

• MS in Mechanical Engineering or Aerospace Engineering
• Proficiency in Femap, NX Nastran, Altair Hyperworks, NX, and Matlab
• Experience in performing static, dynamic, analysis of both composites and metallic materials
• Knowledge of composite materials application for extreme environments
• Previous experience in aerospace manufacturing facility

Northrop Grumman Total Rewards Primary Level Salary Range: $91,800.00 - $137,600.00 The above salary range represents a general guideline; however, Northrop Grumman considers a number of factors when determining base salary offers such as the scope and responsibilities of the position and the candidate's experience, education, skills and current market conditions. Depending on the position, employees may be eligible for overtime, shift differential, and a discretionary bonus in addition to base pay. Annual bonuses are designed to reward individual contributions as well as allow employees to share in company results. Employees in Vice President or Director positions may be eligible for Long Term Incentives.
