The first Music & Arts was located in a small house in Bethesda, MD, run by founder Benjamin O'Brien. When it opened in 1952, it offered printed music, music lessons, dance lessons, and art supplies. The focus shifted solely to music shortly after, a decision that remains today.
Since the 1990s, Music & Arts expanded nationwide through growth and acquisitions. In 2005, it merged with American Music to become the largest band and orchestra instrument retailer in the U.S. Now part of Guitar Center, it has over 200 retail stores, 120+ educational representatives, and 300+ affiliate locations.
