Job description

The Streets Maintenance Technician is responsible for performing a wide range of routine and specialized tasks in the Public Works Department. Work duties include applying pesticides, landscaping, irrigation and manual labor for street repair and maintenance. Depending on assignment, this position may require participation on a rotation schedule for on-call after hours support, which includes weekends, evenings, and holidays. Other duties may include related tasks as assigned.

  • Responsible for spraying pesticides and performing landscape maintenance of City facilities and rights of ways.
  • Maintains complete and accurate records related to assigned work including work performed, pesticide usage, equipment repair and maintenance, and maintains an inventory of necessary pesticides and fertilizers.
  • Ensures the safety of City equipment and others by following proper safety procedures; performs routine checks and preventive maintenance on equipment.
  • Monitors irrigation system by daily observations and inspections.
  • Maintains irrigation systems by troubleshooting problems, repairing mainline breaks, installing sprinkler systems, adjusting watering schedules for conservation, adjusting irrigation heads.
  • Working knowledge of irrigation system, to include electrical, automatic valves and controller pump section and pumping system.
  • Adjustments to equipment and watering schedules may need to be made to take into consideration inclement weather or rain/storms.
  • On-call rotation to take care of any off-hour street issues.
  • Conduct routine inspections of streets and report any hazards, damages, or safety concerns.
  • Ability to supervise and train employees, to include organizing, prioritizing, and scheduling work assignments.
  • Project management skills and the ability to resolve complex problems and issues.
Education and Experience
  • High School diploma or GED equivalent
  • One (1) year of general work experience involving heavy physical labor
  • Possess a valid Arizona Structural Pesticide License in Right of Ways or Turf & Ornamentals and one certification such as or equivalent to:
  1. Arizona Certified Landscape Professional
  2. Turf Grass Professional
  3. Smartscape Certification
  4. Certified Arborist by I.S.A.
OTHER JOB REQUIREMENTS
  • Must possess and maintain a valid Arizona driver’s license or obtain one within thirty (30) days of hire, unless a qualifying military exception applies. Documentation for any military-related exception must be submitted to Human Resources.
  • Employment is contingent upon successful completion of a background check and drug screening in accordance with the City’s Drug and Alcohol Policy and applicable law.
  • Drug Screening includes testing for THC

  • Occasionally perform other Streets Maintenance duties such as rights of ways maintenance, filling potholes, resurfacing streets, and road construction projects.
  • Operate equipment in streets and construction environment.
  • Work patiently and tactfully with a diverse customer environment.
  • Work in a consensus management environment.
  • Maintain and repair applicator/spray equipment and parts such as nozzles, pumps, meters, connections, tanks, and seals.
  • Recognize safety hazards and apply appropriate safety precautions during spray operations.
  • Assist other divisions as needed for events and special projects.
