Job summary

City of Vero Beach is seeking a Maintenance Worker to perform manual labor tasks in streets and stormwater systems under general supervision. You will clean drainage ditches and assist with sidewalks, operate various tools and vehicles, and restore the work area to its original condition while actively supporting the City's safety programs.

At least 1 year of outdoor heavy manual labor is required, along with a valid driver’s license (Class E; Class B preferred).

Qualifications

  • Minimum of one (1) year of construction maintenance or other experience performing heavy manual labor outdoors.
  • Ability to operate a variety of vehicles and equipment and follow safety procedures.
  • Candidate must have a valid driver’s license (Class E; Class B preferred) and be able to obtain required safety certifications.

Responsibilities

Job description

Under general supervision performs manual laboring tasks associated with streets and stormwater collection systems and performs related duties as assigned. The following duties have been provided as examples of the essential types of work performed by positions within this job classification. Management reserves the right to add, modify, change or rescind work assignments as needed.

  • Cleans and maintains drainage ditches, swales, culverts and stormwater collection systems;
  • Assists crews in constructing and maintaining sidewalks, headwalls, driveways, stormwater collection systems and related maintenance tasks;
  • Operates a variety of vehicles and equipment;
  • Restores work area to original condition;
  • Supports and actively promotes the City's safety programs. Follows standard operating procedures, observes safety practices and reports potential safety hazards;
  • Knowledge of street and storm drainage construction, maintenance practices and procedures including the proper use of tools and equipment;
  • Knowledge of occupational hazards and safety practices applicable to construction and maintenance work;
  • Ability to safely operate assigned vehicles, power or hand tools and equipment;
  • Ability to follow written and oral instructions;
  • Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with supervisors, co-workers and the general public;
  • Ability to communicate effectively;
OTHER JOB CHARACTERISTICS:
  • Exposure to potential physical harm, infectious disease, and hazardous chemicals;
  • Ability to perform heavy manual tasks for extended periods of time in all weather extremes;
  • Ability to lift and carry heavy or bulky items frequently (up to100 lbs.)
  • Must be able to wear personal protection equipment required for all major job functions
TOOLS AND EQUIPMENT:
  • City vehicles (truck and trailer), ATV, lawn mower, tiller, concrete saw, concrete mixer, weedeater, blower, compactor, chain saw, ax, pitch fork, rakes, shovels, hoes and common hand tools.
EDUCATION AND EXPEREINCE:
  • A minimum of one (1) year of construction maintenance or other experience in performing heavy manual labor in an outdoor environment.
LICENSES/CERTIFICATIONS:
  • Possession of a valid driver's license, Class E; Class B preferred;
  • Ability to obtain a valid Confined Space Certificate within 6 months;
  • FDOT Flagging Certification within 12 months.
  • Stormwater license C preferred.
