The City of New Albany is seeking a Laborer to perform maintenance of the storm water system under supervision. Responsibilities include repairing, replacing, and cleaning using department tools, and working around traffic, construction equipment, streams, creeks, and public structures.

Responsibilities also cover preventative maintenance, following project specifications, operating and maintaining tools and equipment, and being available for emergencies.

Qualifications

  • Able to communicate effectively both orally and in written form.
  • Pleasant, friendly, and outgoing demeanor.
  • Willingness to take on additional tasks as assigned.
  • Familiar with basic OSHA standards and safety practices.
  • Must have an unexpired Motor Vehicle's License and a good driving record.
  • Experience in construction preferred.
  • CDL preferred or must obtain within 6 months of starting.

Job description

To perform maintenance of storm water system as directed by foreman. The Laborer position is responsible for the repairing, replacing, and cleaning utilizing department supplied tools. This position will require work around traffic, construction equipment, streams, creeks, residential homes and public structures.

  1. Performs preventative maintenance on storm sewer system.
  2. Becomes and remains familiar with laying of pipe for drainage systems.
  3. Follows directions per project specifications.
  4. Uses and maintains hand tools associated with construction activity of storm sewer system (i.e. shovels, rakes, sledgehammer, quickie saws, concrete finishing tools, etc.).
  5. Possesses and retains proper license to operate vehicle.
  6. Remains available for all emergency situations.
  7. Checks equipment before use.
  8. Determines when equipment needs to be used.
  9. Operates equipment according to safety guidelines.
  10. Performs maintenance when it is necessary.
  11. Performs other duties as assigned.

  2. Significant amount of time will be spent working outdoors and in inclimate weather (within reason and safety) to include: hot, humid, cold, rain, ice and snow.
