General Statement of Duties

Performs a variety of unskilled and semi-skilled manual labor tasks, light equipment operation, and other duties as required within the Streets Section of the Public Services Department.

Distinguishing Features of the Class

Employees in this class perform semi-skilled and unskilled manual labor tasks in street construction, maintenance, and repair, including asphalt paving, concrete finishing, masonry, and operating light to medium equipment. Work may involve after-hours call-backs and requires possession of a commercial driver’s license.

Work Environment and Hazards

Work involves hazards such as working in extreme weather, noise, moving mechanical parts, dust, fumes, oils, tight spaces, and exposure to OSHA standards on bloodborne pathogens. Tasks are performed under supervision with regular review for adherence to standards.

Duties and Responsibilities

• Maintain and repair streets, sidewalks, cemeteries, and driveways.
• Operate dump trucks, loaders, backhoes, and other equipment for hauling, loading, and digging.
• Prepare asphalt, lay curbs, gutters, sidewalks, and build forms.
• Perform street grading, storm drain cleaning, landscaping, and snow removal.
• Set up safety signs and flag traffic around construction sites.
• Participate in fabricating and erecting street signs, painting markings, and maintaining traffic signals.
• Perform other related duties as assigned.

Minimum Education and Experience

High School Diploma or GED and 2-4 years of related experience, or an equivalent combination.

Special Requirements

Possession of a valid North Carolina Class “B” Commercial Driver’s License (Class “A” preferred). NC Pesticide License is also preferred. Ability to obtain license within 18 months of hire.
