Job summary

Abilene Christian University seeks a Tax and Payroll Compliance Accountant to oversee federal, state, local, and international tax compliance and payroll tax reporting. The role includes coordinating Form 990, 990-T, 1042-S, 1098-T, and 1099 filings, plus supporting payroll tax processes and backups for payroll processing.

The successful candidate will work across Finance, HR, Benefits, and other departments to maintain accurate filings, respond to notices, and implement controls.

Qualifications

• Bachelor's degree in accounting, finance, taxation, business administration, or a related field.
• Three years of progressively responsible experience in tax compliance, payroll administration, employment tax, accounting, or a closely related field.
• Demonstrated experience preparing or supporting tax filings, payroll tax reporting, account reconciliations, and compliance documentation.
• Ability to learn and perform established payroll processes as a backup resource.
• Experience working with confidential employee and financial information.
• Strong analytical, research, reconciliation, and problem-solving skills.
• Proficiency with Microsoft Excel and enterprise financial or payroll technology.

Responsibilities

• Prepare and coordinate the University's Form 990 and related schedules.
• Assist with Form 1098-T and Form 1099 reporting processes and related issues.
• Evaluate tuition discounts and educational benefits for tax treatment.
• Develop and maintain tax procedures, calendars, workpapers, checklists, and documentation.
• Calculate and remit Texas sales tax and monitor state/local tax obligations.
• Support payroll tax withholding, deposits, filings, and reconciliations.
• Provide tax and payroll training and department support.
