Job summary

The City of Des Moines is seeking a Parks & Recreation Director to provide strategic and operational leadership for the parks and recreation system. The director will shape budgets, master planning, and program delivery across facilities, events and senior services.

Reporting to the City leadership, you will build a high-performing team, engage with community groups, and ensure services meet community needs while balancing resources and long-range planning goals.

Qualifications

• Bachelor's degree in parks and recreation administration, public administration, business administration or closely related field.
• CPRP or CPRE credential is preferred.
• Municipal parks and recreation leadership experience is desirable.

Responsibilities

• Provides strategic and operational leadership for the parks and recreation system and sets department goals.
• Leads development and evaluation of the Parks & Recreation Master Plan and long-range plans.
• Oversees delivery of programs, services and facilities with emphasis on accessibility and community benefit.
• Manages operating and capital budgets; monitors revenues and expenditures and allocates resources.
• Develops financially sustainable program models, including partnerships and grants.
• Builds relationships with residents, organizations, schools, businesses and partners to expand opportunities.
