Job summary

UL Research Institutes in Skokie, IL, seeks a Health, Safety, and Environment Lead to provide expert safety leadership for MDRI research, labs, and pilot-scale operations. The role guides risk management and safety programs across functions, influencing planning, training, and compliance.

You will partner with researchers, facilities, and corporate safety teams to implement best practices, drive improvements, and ensure a safe, compliant research environment. 8+ years in HSE is expected.

Qualifications

• Bachelor’s degree in relevant safety, health, or engineering field.
• Minimum of 8 years of professional HSE/occupational safety experience in R&D.
• Experience with workplace inspections, hazard assessments, audits, incident reviews, and corrective actions.
• Working knowledge of OSHA regulations.
• Experience delivering training or communicating technical safety information.
• Proficiency with Microsoft Office and electronic systems for documentation and reporting.

Responsibilities

• Lead HSE activities across MDRI operations, including planning and day-to-day work.
• Lead hazard identification, risk assessments, reviews, and risk-control strategies.
• Conduct readiness reviews to verify controls and training.
• Investigate incidents/near misses and drive corrective actions.
• Partner with MDRI leadership, researchers, facilities, and vendors to integrate HSE requirements.
• Develop and deliver HSE training and safety communications.
