Job summary

Advance CTE is seeking a visionary Senior Director of Communications & Advocacy to lead our public voice for Career Technical Education and drive federal and state policy impact.

The role oversees a high-performing team, translating policy analysis into compelling storytelling and coordinating integrated communications strategies that engage policymakers, members, and partners nationwide.

Qualifications

• 15+ years of related experience in strategic communications, public affairs, or advocacy, including at least five years in a leadership role.
• Ability to develop and maintain positive relationships with a wide variety of people, including boards, staff, government officials, funders and media.
• Deep understanding of the U.S. education system; familiarity with Perkins V Act and workforce development policy preferred.
• Proven ability to synthesize complex data into plain-English narratives that inspire action in both written and verbal communications.
• Experience building relationships with the media and elevating an organization’s profile.
• Ability to work independently, meet deadlines, and manage multiple projects simultaneously; excellent organizational skills.
• Proven team leader with strong supervisory skills.
• Knowledge of political and policy environment; equity-focused approach.
• Proficiency with CMS platforms (WordPress), CRM tools, and digital marketing suites.

Responsibilities

• Direct and oversee internal and external communications strategies for multiple projects and priorities.
• Protect and enhance the brand with consistent voice across digital, print, and social platforms.
• Lead external advocacy strategies, align messaging with policy priorities, and engage policymakers and partners.
• Develop tools for state CTE leaders to communicate value to decision-makers, including fact sheets and talking points.
• Lead media relations, provide spokesperson support, and secure op-eds and blog placements.
• Contribute to fundraising, convenings, and organizational leadership as part of the Executive Team.
• Oversee travel, budgeting, and cross-team collaboration to advance CTE funding and policy.
