Job summary

Kinsale Insurance in Richmond, VA, is seeking a Coverage Attorney to own the coverage litigation process from issue analysis to resolution. You'll work with outside counsel, mediate and try cases, and advise on claims handling practices in a fast-paced, analytical environment.

The ideal candidate holds a J.D., is admitted to practice in at least one state, and brings strong writing and analytical skills, plus experience in commercial property/casualty insurance and E&S.

Qualifications

• J.D. degree and a four-year college degree.
• Active admission to practice law in at least one state.
• Superior writing skills; capable of drafting claim correspondence and pleadings.
• Strong analytical ability to interpret state laws, regulations, and case law related to insurance coverage and claims handling.
• Experience in commercial property and casualty insurance, preferably in the excess and surplus lines market.

Responsibilities

• Oversee all aspects of the coverage litigation process.
• Analyze coverage issues and exposure across litigation levels.
• Evaluate claims handling and underwriting practices to identify risk and support sound coverage positions.
• Draft pleadings and motions with outside counsel.
• Review subpoenas and state insurance department filings.
• Participate in mediations, arbitrations, and trials; travel as needed.
• Prepare coverage position papers on venue and handling.
• Advise senior management on responses to changes in the legal environment.
